Chapter Twelve
Alex opened his front door even before Kate could knock and took her hand, closing the door back behind him as he led her back down the walkway.
âWait, where are we going?â Kate asked, clearly confused. âI thought we were watching a movie.â
âWe are. But not here.â
He opened his garage, walked over to his Harley, and handed her a helmet before fixing his into place.
âUm, whatâs that?â
âA helmet. You put it on your head. Like so.â He pointed to his helmet and Kate rolled her eyes.
âI know what it is, funny man. I mean what am I supposed to do with it?â
Alex cocked his head, another sarcastic reply on the tip of his tongue. âDo you really want me to answer that?â
âIâve never ridden a motorcycle. Surely there are practice sessions or something, right?â
He fought the urge to laugh at the clear fear on her face. Damn, she was cute. âHow about if I agree to go slow?â
âUh, clearly youâre forgetting that Iâve ridden with you in that thing.â She motioned to his Corvette. âNot sure you know the word slow.â
âAll right. Point taken. But I wonât let anything happen to you. Trust me.â He reached for the helmet and placed it on her head, fixing the strap in place, then straddled the bike, peering over his shoulder at her. âWrap your arms around my waist.â
âIâm scared.â
âI know. But sometimes we have to play through the fear. Isnât that what weâre doing?â
Kate drew a breath and then, with clear reluctance, slipped in behind him, her arms at his waist, sending a surge of heat through him from her touch to every nerve ending in his body.
âYouâll keep me safe?â
âIâll never let anything happen to you.â
âAll right.â
âReady?â
âAs Iâll ever be.â
He backed the bike out of his garage, then took off, faster than he should, but he knew Kate well enough now to know that she needed to conquer the fear first before she could relax. A scream hit his ears, followed by lots of name-calling; then, finally, a giggle of excitement, and the next time she screamed out, he knew she was having fun.
They continued out of Hamilton Stables and onto the main road, and Alex contemplated driving around all night, just so he could hear that sweet scream and feel her pressed against him. Never in his life had one person impacted him so fully, changed his mood with one smile, challenged him to be better. More. He never wanted to let her go.
But heâd promised her a movie, and there were no movies like this. He pulled left down another dark back road and Kate shook against him.
âWhat is it?â he called as they slowed.
âNothing.â
âAre you afraid?â
âYes.â
âShould I stop?â
âIf you stop here, Iâll never speak to you again.â
Alex laughed. âThen whatâs the problem?â
âHavenât you ever watched a horror movie in your life? Serial killers live in dark woods. Men with hockey masks or chainsaws, ready to eat your flesh.â She shook again, and he couldnât help it. He burst out laughing, the effort to fight it causing him to laugh all the more.
