Michael Kough was immediately alarmed. His head of production reported Suzie was late to call with her Safevac code so production was being delayed.

Suzie Li had been the epitome of reliability. She had never missed a deadline. Big Brain said it did not matter. Production would not be delayed because he had the entire code in his head.

But it mattered to Kough. He imagined a thousand minor things that could have led to the delay, but he also worried about the Dirty Dogs hunting her.

Kough finally took the risk of calling her mobile. It was his only emergency link to her. He did not know, or want to know, where she lived. It went to voicemail. Big Brain chided his call could have revealed his number to some unfriendly person.

An hour after her deadline, time seemed to rush. She was soon two, then three, then four hours late. Kough began calling Sydney hospitals. Li Suzie, her surname was written first in the Chinese style, had not been admitted to any of them. Nor was she being held at any police station.

Charlotte could sense there was a big problem at Safevac but could get nothing from her frantic husband, who claimed he was just dealing with a production matter.

Big Brain supplied the code and Safevac production got under way for another thirty days. Kough took Charlotte by the hand and they went to bed early. He told her all was well; the production issue had been resolved. Their happy, routine family life would go on peacefully as he had promised.

He was wrong. His wife would leave him early the following morning.
