Much to his displeasure, the maître d' seated us at a surprisingly good table with a wonderful view of the illuminated slopes. A delightful waitress in formal attire approached and introduced herself. Autumn was a cute blonde with her hair in a stylish updo with wispy golden locks dangling around her ears. She told us about the specials and took our order. I went with the Rocky Mountain medallions—petite filet mignon, grilled to perfection, served with creamy spinach and mushroom sauce. Dakota went with the same.

This was the kind of place where your glass was never empty, and if you dropped your fork, someone was there to offer you a new one before you even looked for your server.

I would have ordered a nice bottle of wine, but Dakota was in uniform and had a policy against it. The company, the view, and the food were enjoyable enough. The meal was fantastic. Tender and juicy. Melt in your mouth delicious.

We kicked around ideas about the two cases. We were halfway through the meal when a man approached with a disturbed look on his face.

Dakota stiffened.

"What's going on here!?” the man said in an accusatory voice.

It didn't take a genius to figure out this was Dakota's fiancé.

He was a handsome guy in his late 30s with short, light brown hair, hazel eyes, and chiseled features. A thin beard rimmed his square face. He was about 6 feet tall and athletic but not overly muscular.

"I'm having dinner with a colleague," Dakota said, somewhat annoyed. "Connor, I'd like you to meet Deputy Wild."

I offered my hand to shake, but he didn't accept.

"Can I have a word with you?" he hissed at her.

Dakota looked embarrassed. “Excuse me," she said before pushing away from the table and stepping aside.

They had a heated exchange while I continued to enjoy my meal. I couldn't help but overhear their discussion. So could a lot of other patrons.

"What are you doing here?" Dakota asked.

"I'm having a business meeting with Dalton."

Her brow knitted with confusion. "Why are you meeting with Dalton?"

"Why are you having dinner with this guy?"

"We're investigating a case, Connor."

"Looks like you're on a date."

"Look at me. Is this what I wear when we go on dates?"

His face tensed.

"You’re making a scene. Go back to your business meeting. We'll discuss this later."

He glared at her.

"I'm not doing this here," she said in a low voice that was not to be trifled with.

Connor's eyes flicked to me before walking away.

Dakota returned to the table. "Sorry about that. He gets a little jealous sometimes."

"I've noticed."

"He's a really good guy. Just a little…"

"Insecure."

"At times."

"You should join him. I can finish my meal alone."

"I'm not going to let anyone dictate what I can and can't do. I'm having a meal with a colleague, and there is nothing going on between us."

"We do have a little history," I said, playing devil’s advocate.

"If he doesn't trust me, what is he doing with me?"

"True."

We finished our meal, and I picked up the hefty tab and left a nice tip for Autumn.
