My battle plans were firmed-up overnight by Harris, lists made, kit requisitioned, Bob Staines to send more kit, more rockets for the Yaks. And now everyone on the base knew that something big was up.

​Morten reported more Army medics on the way. My USAF liaison then reported that ten medics were also on the way, special forces patrol medics, so they were soldiers who had learnt medicine.

​And Colonel Clifford was on his way back here, along with fifty Royal Marines, volunteers, and fifty Paras – also volunteers.

Forrester called after lunch, early his time, and Fishy would bring out two troops of volunteers, desert browns and HALO kit.

​The next call was from General Boltweir. ‘Colonel Wilco, you’re moving men and machines. Are you about to start a war?’

​‘About to shorten one, sir. You saw the movie, Camel Toe Base, this will be identical.’

​‘I’m starting to get an erection, Colonel.’

​‘I … am trying hard not to imagine that, sir.’

​He laughed. ‘Ask for whatever you need, but our military reporters and camera boys are on the way from Europe.’

​‘All we need is the element of surprise, and some luck, sir.’

​‘Admiral Jacobs is sending men…’

​‘Yes, sir, his best SEALs, men who’ve been on several jobs with me.’

At 6pm the Prime Minister called. ‘Colonel, they’re reporting that you’re about to start a war.’

​‘About to shorten one, sir, Camel Toe Base all over again.’

​‘Draw them out and massacre them; that would shorten the war. And your chances of success?’

​‘We’ve done it all before, sir, we just need some luck and a quiet insert.’

​‘And casualties here?’

​‘Higher than I would like, but much less than those killed in a ten-year war.’

​‘I take your meaning, and I agree, we don’t want to get bogged down. Well, good luck, but you don’t need it.’

​‘Thank you, sir.’ I called Tinker. ‘Have a look at the map, an old Soviet airfield south of Kandahar and twenty miles north of the Pakistani border. We’ll take it with a large force and hold it, all Top Secret for now, so I want local movements, and any movements towards it. Get everyone on it, but keep it under wraps.’

​‘I’ll get the kettle on.’

​I went and found Slider. ‘You and your best seven men, you insert by Skyvan tonight, leave at midnight, you land at an old airfield and walk south a mile and find some cover – it’s flat.

​‘You make sure that you’re not seen, so cover your tracks, heads down during the day, and you observe the area. When the rest of us insert you call the go/no-go. You should be on the ground for three or four nights before we insert.

​‘Any trouble and you walk or run, snipe at them, find some cover, and we’ll come get you or bomb them, but you’ll be two hundred miles from Farah and three hundred from here.’

​His eyes widened. ‘Shit, need to be quiet then and not be seen,’ he worried.

​‘No risks, hide and wait. Get ready, take extra water and extra rations, enough for four days maybe.
