How to Stop Worrying What Other People Think

From time to time, we all worry about what other people think of us. This is a part of human nature, and it is not always a bad thing! Sometimes we choose the wrong path, and guidance from a true friend can help us resume the proper course.

But if one becomes overly concerned with what others think, it can prevent us from living life to its fullest. With this in mind, here are some hints on how to stop worrying and start living:

Consider the source. Is this person a true friend? Do they have your best interests at heart? Or are they like Cordelia Fitzherbert, whom I once overheard mocking me as Lady Dull-son, and asking her friends, “Can you believe that she was once considered to be vivacious?” This is precisely the sort of person whose good opinion you should not care to have. We will probably never know the identity of the person who slipped a piece of ice down the back of Miss Fitzherbert’s dress that very evening, forcing her to make an untimely retreat to the ladies’ retiring room right when she was supposed to dance with the Earl of Marbury. But I think we can all agree that it was no more than she deserved.

Be an Original. Why is it that some women are censured for the slightest misstep, while others sail through life breaking every conceivable rule, and are celebrated as “Originals”? In a word, confidence. The gossiping sticklers of the ton bear a certain resemblance to a school of sharks, except that instead of smelling blood in the water, their specialty is sniffing out the tiniest trace of self-doubt. It is therefore imperative that if you were to, say, attend a scandalous bachelor auction with the express intention of purchasing a night of unimaginable pleasure courtesy of your older brother’s best friend, that you walk into that room with your head held high.

Remember that you only live once. Ask yourself, when you are old and gray, which will serve as a greater comfort—the knowledge that you led a meticulously respectable life, or the memory of the time you made love with Gabriel Davenport, the greatest lover in all of England? Surely I need not answer such an absurd question.

So let us heed the words of the poets. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, dear reader, and value at one farthing the talk of crabbed old men (and women!) And let us follow our own North Star, and create our own happily-ever-after.
