âWhat kind of stop?â Layla asks.
âWeâre meeting with someone,â Nick says as they drive down the street at a much more reasonable speed.
âWho?â
âRaymond.â
âRaymond? From the auto parts store?â
âThatâs the one,â Nick replies as he slows down to maneuver around a couple of abandoned cars in the roadway.
âWhy are we bringing him?â
âBecauseâ¦heâs a friend, and heâs someone we can help,â Nick says, looking over at her.
She shakes her head. âI get that, and thatâs great, but we donât really have the room,â she says, glancing at the crowded back seat.
âHe helped us, Mom,â Alex says. âHe gave us the part we needed. We couldnât just leave him behind.â
She smiles at Alex and gently touches her face. âItâs not about that, honey. Another person is going to make this a very crowded road trip. We have to think about our supplies.â
âHeâs bringing his own car,â Nick says as he slows down.
âHe is?â Layla questions.
âYeah.â
âWell, that changes everything,â she says.
Nick immediately spots a dark green little Jeep-like vehicle with the white hardtop parked at the intersection of Cochran and Elm.
âIs that him?â Layla asks.
âIâm not really sure, but Iâm going to say yes.â
A moment later, the driver climbs out and waves at them.
âItâs him,â Alex says, waving back through the windshield.
âWe need to make this quick,â Layla says. âWe have no idea if your friends back there have more friends.â
âAgreed,â Nick says, stopping just a few feet from Raymondâs truck. He climbs out, leaving his door open as Ron walks toward him.
Layla comes around to the front of the Dodge and smiles at him. âHi, Raymond,â she says. âI hear youâre coming with us.â
âI guess soâ¦if thatâs all right.â
âOf course, it is,â she says, glancing at Nick.
âA minute ago, she wasnât so sure,â Nick says with a wicked little grin.
âThatâs not what I meant, and you know it. I was only worried about spaceâ¦and here you are with your own,â she says, pausing for a moment and looking at his odd little vehicle. âWhat is that?â
âItâs a 1960 Toyota FJ40.â
âIt looks like a Jeep.â
âSorta is,â he says, looking proudly back at the little Toyota.
Suddenly, Alex slaps the top of the Power Wagon. âCome on, people. You can chit-chat later. We gotta get moving,â she says.
âYeahâ¦yeah. How about Kyle and Sam ride with you?â Nick asks Raymond.
âThat works for me.â
âThey can tell you all about our little adventure so far.â
âThat soundsâ¦exciting.â
âSorta.â
A few minutes later, theyâre on the move again. Raymond, Sam, and Kyle in the Toyota and the others in the Dodge. Nick takes the lead as they roll through the eerily quiet side streets on their way to the main highway through town. Layla scans each car they pass, searching for any sign of movement or threats. Nick turns at Ashland Avenue and immediately slows down as the high school comes into view at the end of the block, dark, black smoke rising from the roof in multiple locations.
âHoly shit,â Alex says.
âWhat the hell happened here?â Layla asks as theyâre driving by the building.
