“What kind of stop?” Layla asks.

“We’re meeting with someone,” Nick says as they drive down the street at a much more reasonable speed.

“Who?”

“Raymond.”

“Raymond? From the auto parts store?”

“That’s the one,” Nick replies as he slows down to maneuver around a couple of abandoned cars in the roadway.

“Why are we bringing him?”

“Because…he’s a friend, and he’s someone we can help,” Nick says, looking over at her.

She shakes her head. “I get that, and that’s great, but we don’t really have the room,” she says, glancing at the crowded back seat.

“He helped us, Mom,” Alex says. “He gave us the part we needed. We couldn’t just leave him behind.”

She smiles at Alex and gently touches her face. “It’s not about that, honey. Another person is going to make this a very crowded road trip. We have to think about our supplies.”

“He’s bringing his own car,” Nick says as he slows down.

“He is?” Layla questions.

“Yeah.”

“Well, that changes everything,” she says.

Nick immediately spots a dark green little Jeep-like vehicle with the white hardtop parked at the intersection of Cochran and Elm.

“Is that him?” Layla asks.

“I’m not really sure, but I’m going to say yes.”

A moment later, the driver climbs out and waves at them.

“It’s him,” Alex says, waving back through the windshield.

“We need to make this quick,” Layla says. “We have no idea if your friends back there have more friends.”

“Agreed,” Nick says, stopping just a few feet from Raymond’s truck. He climbs out, leaving his door open as Ron walks toward him.

Layla comes around to the front of the Dodge and smiles at him. “Hi, Raymond,” she says. “I hear you’re coming with us.”

“I guess so…if that’s all right.”

“Of course, it is,” she says, glancing at Nick.

“A minute ago, she wasn’t so sure,” Nick says with a wicked little grin.

“That’s not what I meant, and you know it. I was only worried about space…and here you are with your own,” she says, pausing for a moment and looking at his odd little vehicle. “What is that?”

“It’s a 1960 Toyota FJ40.”

“It looks like a Jeep.”

“Sorta is,” he says, looking proudly back at the little Toyota.

Suddenly, Alex slaps the top of the Power Wagon. “Come on, people. You can chit-chat later. We gotta get moving,” she says.

“Yeah…yeah. How about Kyle and Sam ride with you?” Nick asks Raymond.

“That works for me.”

“They can tell you all about our little adventure so far.”

“That sounds…exciting.”

“Sorta.”

A few minutes later, they’re on the move again. Raymond, Sam, and Kyle in the Toyota and the others in the Dodge. Nick takes the lead as they roll through the eerily quiet side streets on their way to the main highway through town. Layla scans each car they pass, searching for any sign of movement or threats. Nick turns at Ashland Avenue and immediately slows down as the high school comes into view at the end of the block, dark, black smoke rising from the roof in multiple locations.

“Holy shit,” Alex says.

“What the hell happened here?” Layla asks as they’re driving by the building.
