White conservative and liberal responses to black grief respond dialectically to each other; they do not adequately respond to black loss. During the “Black Lives Matter” day at Seattle schools, another parent of a Latino child lamented how the day had gone for her son. She said her son had felt scared going into the day.“After school, she learned that her 5-year-old was asked to stand up in front of his class and talk about Black Lives Matter and his shirt. By the end of the day, he had taken it off and shoved it in his cubby. I asked him why, and he said because he was tired of people asking him about it and wanting to take his picture,” the mom wrote. “I was so angry all I could do was pick him up, hug him so tightly and said, ‘I can see why you chose not to wear it. That sounds uncomfortable and unfair.’”33
