Finn stared into Sarah’s eyes. Her eyelids drooped and her movements were slow. Not quite herself lately, although she had mentioned feeling sick.

“Hemlock has plenty of medical uses too,” Sarah said. “Like treating epilepsy, insomnia, even breast cancer. Of course, back in those days, it was celebrated as an ornamental plant since they didn’t fully understand the dangers.”

Emmie groaned. “But they must’ve known it was poisonous.”

“To an extent, I’m sure they did, but the average person didn’t always get accurate information back then. It was common to get advice on health from a barber or a clergyman. But hemlock is a beautiful, flowery plant, perfect for decorations, and I’m sure someone made a lot of money selling it as an essential part of anyone’s home decor.”

Emmie cringed. “That’s messed up.”

“Very messed up, and a lot of people died from it.” Sarah touched her stomach and glanced away as she winced. “The pain would’ve been horrible. Something like what I felt.”

Finn looked into Sarah’s eyes. “Are you… feeling the poisonings?”

Sarah touched her stomach. “It comes and goes.”

His body tensed as he looked toward the kitchen counter, where he’d left his phone charging earlier. “We should get you out of here. It’s not safe.” He turned to Emmie as his face warmed. “Why didn’t you tell me she was going through this?”

Emmie crossed her arms defensively. “You know she gets sick.”

“Not poisoning sick.”

“She’s not in any real danger.”

Finn’s eyes widened. “Isn’t she?” He gestured to Sarah’s face. “I knew it was something more than just the weather. She can’t stay here.”

“Finn,” Sarah spoke softly while touching his arm, “you’re overreacting.”

“But you’re feeling the effects of hemlock. The poison. You need a doctor.”

Sarah shook her head. “I haven’t consumed it physically. How would I explain this to a doctor?”

“But they died from it.”

“I’m fine now.”

Finn stared into her eyes for a few seconds without speaking, then glanced over at Emmie who looked back at him quietly. He clenched his teeth. Something had gotten into that girl recently. Jealousy, for sure, but it was more than that. Her demeanor toward him had completely changed since the vacation, and that expression… Contempt?

What are you so afraid of, Em? That I’ll run off with your best friend and leave you all alone?

Maybe if you keep up that attitude.

But it wasn’t just her attitude getting in the way, now she was keeping secrets from him too.

“Don’t be angry at Em,” Sarah said, breaking into his thoughts as if she could read them. “She’s not forcing me to stay here. Nobody is. It’s just all a part of my gift anyway.”

Sarah put on a brave face, although Finn saw through the mask to the pain in her eyes. He stroked her back as Sarah’s smile soothed his panic. She had that power over him. She could connect with strong emotions, but she could affect them as well. The gift went both ways. “Just say the word, and I’ll call the doctor.”

“No need. Doctors can’t help in my case. It’s just part of the job.
