Chapter Nineteen

Paige pushed what was left of her lasagna to the side, then signaled for the check. She crossed her fingers that her lunch would stay down this time, since she hadn’t been able to tolerate much food for the last few days. Stray thoughts came in like a thousand ton weight, and for the second time since this morning after praying to the porcelain god, she contemplated if she were suffering from morning sickness.

“Enough about me and my love triangle,” Bellamy chuckled while using her linen napkin to dry her eyes. “How’s life with the lieutenant colonel?”

“So much has happened, Belli,” Paige gushed. Somehow, she suspended thoughts on the possibilities of her reality. Her body heated just thinking of the way Brenden held her in his arms or how he sniffed her neck before pushing his lips to her racing pulse. More than his simple displays of affection, he had made her fearless and strong while keeping her safe. No other man had managed to give her so much at once.

And she shared it all with Bellamy, giggling while explaining the way he pretended to be an inquisitive student while she prepared for an upcoming lecture. Her heart grew full as she confessed how he respected her views and never coddled her like a child whenever she painted. Without him knowing, he had given her the freedom to be the woman she wanted everyone else to see. Strong, independent, and not so perfect. Which would become evident if her most recent thoughts of a life growing inside her turned out to be true.

“Oh my goodness, you are fucking glowing!” Bellamy released a wide grin. “I still don’t know if I would’ve gone to no river cabin in the woods.” Their laughter rang out from the table.

“Honestly…” Her laughter quieted. “You know how I am about the great outdoors.” She closed her eyes and could almost feel the saltwater sprays splashing upon her skin from the memory of her last boat ride with Brenden. Together, they had escaped the world, cruising along tranquil backwaters until they docked at his river cabin for the weekend. “But I love it there. It’s…beautiful.”

Bellamy’s jaws went slack. She narrowed her dark brown eyes then perched an elbow on the table. “So, when are you going to tell him?”

Paige held her credit card up as the waiter came to their table. Her brows furrowed and she faced the only person who knew her better than her mother. “Tell him what?”

“Don’t shit me, Paige. How you really feel. You’re in love with him.”

“No I’m not.”

“Yes you are.”

“Me having feelings for Brenden in that way isn’t allowed.” Paige closed her eyes and palmed her forehead. Her mind did what she hadn’t wanted it to do and began thinking about Brenden’s secrets and random disappearances. The last one had him leaving in the middle of the night, and he had refused to tell her who to contact if something happened to him. Worse, he came back somewhat detached yet annoyingly overprotective.
