merits. It has been debilitating for the group and saddening for me, because I know that it limits our capacity for being intimate with one another.

Another example: I have already mentioned that beachcombing is one of my favorite activities. I love to go to a beach to stroll, sit, and gather shells, pebbles, and whatever else I find. There is a beach in Hawaii that I especially like because of its tiny shells. To see them you have to sit for a while and just be quiet; then the shells slowly emerge all around you, embedded in and resting on the sand. If you hunt for them, they elude you.

On one of my trips to that beach, I brought along a friend from Nebraska who is accustomed to wide-open spaces. We sat there together, picking up shells and admiring them. I especially liked the tiny ones, while she preferred those that were larger and more impressive.

We were involved in this activity when a group of Japanese tourists arrived and walked out onto the beach. Suddenly my friend became almost frantic. She jumped up and headed down the beach ahead of the group of tourists.
