TWENTY-SEVEN

LUCAS

“Your hands are sweating.” Rosie dropped Lucas’s hand and wiped hers on her shirt. “What is wrong with you? Why are you so nervous?”

Not bothering to answer, Lucas arched an eyebrow. They were approaching Miller’s, and an ice chunk the size of a glacier floated in his stomach.

“It’s just Sam.” Rosie sighed. “He loves you.”

“I came onto his land without his permission, I’m dating his sister, I abandoned his pack…” Lucas ticked the transgressions off on his fingers. “If the situations were reversed, I’d be pissed.”

“So maybe he is.” Rosie shrugged. “He’ll get over it. It doesn’t change how he feels about you.”

Lucas grunted in response as he opened the door for Rosie. Inside, the restaurant was empty. Strange, even for a weekday. Usually, Miller’s drew a large lunch crowd. Glancing at the door, Lucas saw the sign had been flipped to Closed.

Maybe Charlie had decided to close early. They would have to catch up with Sam somewhere else. Taking a step back, Lucas was ready to leave before he heard Sam call to them from inside.

“Are we seriously having a private lunch?” Rosie’s eyes widened.

Sam approached from the back of the restaurant. “I have an in with the assistant manager.”

“I hope you gave her a good tip.”

“Yeah, I did.” Sam waggled his eyebrows.

Rosie swatted his arm. “Pig.”

Sam leveled his gaze at Lucas. “Thank you for coming, guys.” He turned and headed toward the back of the restaurant.

Rosie took Lucas’s hand and pulled him along as she followed Sam to a booth. Sam sat on one side, and Rosie slid in on the other. Lucas sat next to Rosie. He glanced at Sam but quickly averted his gaze.

After a few moments of awkward silence, Rosie cleared her throat. “Sam…”

“Sorry I’m late.” Becca burst into the room, carrying three bottled beverages. As she got closer to the table, Lucas recognized the label—his favorite nonalcoholic beer. “Don’t worry. I won’t stay while you talk pack business or whatever, but I wanted to bring you these and let you know I’ve got some burgers cooking for you in back. They’ll be ready shortly.”

Becca set the beer on the table and bent down to kiss Sam on the cheek. Her whispered “Behave” caused Sam’s cheeks to redden, then she disappeared back into the kitchen.

“This is new to all of us,” Sam said. He cleared his throat. “Me being alpha… Lucas coming from another pack… the two of you… doing whatever you’re doing.” He shook his head. “I think we need to understand each other.” He sighed. “I love you like a brother. You know that. But you need to understand you’re putting me in a tough spot. The Council is watching us closely. I need to know whether you’re here to stay or you’re going back to Beckett Falls. You know I’ll take you back into my pack. But I can’t really allow someone from another pack to stay in my territory.” His gaze flitted to Rosie. “And I can’t let you take Rosie with you.
