Chapter 6
A Living Testimony
It has often been repeated among Christian circles that the only Bible some people will read is the one written by your life. When reaching out to those around you for the purpose of sharing the gospel, I cannot stress how absolutely true this is. In this chapter, I will highlight several areas of your living testimony that will be especially powerful to Muslims who may be reading the “Bible” of your life.
1. Husband/Wife Relationships
For those of you who are married, the relationship you share with your spouse can serve as a veritable beacon of light when it comes to your Christian testimony. Muslim marriages, though sometimes built from, and through, love, often are devoid of the principles which Christ gives to guide us in our relationships with one another. The daily loving, caring, concern, respect, honoring, and helping of your spouse —out of love for Christ— does not occur inside the Muslim home. Yes, respect, honor, and deference will often be shown to the husband by the wife, but rarely is the case reversed and rarer still is it done out of love.
Husbands: Love your wife by practically demonstrating this when your Muslim friends come over. Help her clear the table or wash dishes (yes, even when your guest is there!), make the lunch so your wife can be free to speak with your guest’s wife. Think of practical and obvious things that you could do for her. Even if it is not serving dinner all by yourself, perhaps you could dish out desert or after-dinner tea or coffee. Be sure to portray the fact that, in Christ, your wife is your helpmeet, not a subservient slave.
Wives: Love your husband by verbally respecting him in front of your guests. Talk him up —tell your guest how loving and wonderful your husband is. Tell her of all the things he does for you and why you respect him. Tell her why you love him so much. A love marriage in Christ is vastly different from all others —and it should appear so! Don’t be bashful —talk about your man! Be careful with joking about him —what could be taken as a joke with western company could be seen as rude and disrespectful to eastern guests. Verbally express respect for your husband.
An Example: The husband of a Muslim family accepted Christ as his Saviour. He desired that his wife would join him in his newfound faith. Rather than preach at her, he was advised to simply love her in the way Jesus instructs. Two months went by and, as the husband demonstrated more of Christ’s love to his wife, his wife started to ask questions about this Jesus he now worshipped. Finally, she, too, gave her life to Jesus Christ.
When asked what drew her to seek Christ, she talked about her husband. “When I saw him clearing the supper dishes, I knew he was a changed man. Before this, he never would have helped me with housework. But
