Chapter Ten
Over the next two weeks, life gradually settled back into a routine for Natalie. She was working again, more motivated than ever to excel at her job since she and Eli would start looking for houses soon. The excitement of house-hunting with her husband excited her so much, she worked overtime some days. When they found the perfect house, she wanted to make sure they were ready to make a down payment, buy furniture and do other oddities that came with home ownership.
Eli was back to work, too, patrolling again with Gary. Third-shift. Natalie didnât particularly like him working the graveyard shift. She didnât like his profession at all, something she used to tell him regularly, but now, didnât bother mentioning. What was the use? That was his job â what he loved doing. Who was she to stand in the way of that?
She wondered if her motherâs death, nearly a month ago, had changed her perspective on Eliâs line of work. Possibly. Why live life if you canât do what you love? Because as sure as day turned into night, death was a guarantee for everyone. There was no sense in being afraid of everything. A scared person is usually never happy. And if you donât find yourself being happy, at least a few times a day, then your life is pretty much already â well â over.
Eli was happy. In turn, she was happy. He was doing what he loved, and she had no complaints about seeing him in his black uniform, with a gold-plated badge, a pair of black, nice-fitted pants that showed off his long, muscular legs and the heavy police belt that held his weapons and things. She was proud of him â so proud he hadnât given up. He was a fighter, and she knew heâd work extra hard for her.
He told her she was his motivation. His reason for living. For coming home after a long shift to lie in bed and watch her breathe â the same things he used to do before they were married, only now, she was actually his.
A week ago, she and Cadence had gone over to their motherâs house to finish cleaning it out. They had a buyer and had settled on $85,000, ten thousand less than the house was worth, but neither sister wanted to haggle. Besides, the items inside the house were more valuable than any price they could put on the house.
The sisters agreed to split the family photos. All those pictures and other mementos were worth more than money. One particular keepsake Cadence wanted Natalie to have was their fatherâs badge along with a picture of him in uniform. Natalie didnât cry when she saw it. She smiled, then found a nice home for it on a bookshelf in her living room.
Other things the sisters kept were some of their motherâs jewelry and a few articles of clothing that still had the smell of Mildredâs favorite perfume â White Diamonds. Everything else was donated to Goodwill.
