Table 2A.1 Data Availability, by Country and Year Span

Exports and Imports

The data on trade come from UN Comtrade and cover 129 countries and 28 ISIC manufacturing industries over the 1976–2014 period.8 Five-year average exports and imports are constructed for each country-industry pair. For the first period in the data set, the average is available for 4 years of data (1976–79). The resulting data set contains average exports and imports by country and industry over eight five-year periods (1976–79, 1980–84, 1985–89, 1990–94, 1995–99, 2000–2004, 2005–09, and 2010–14). The panel is balanced for 49 countries and unbalanced for the rest due to insufficient time or industry coverage. For example, data for Albania, Armenia, Estonia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, and the Kyrgyz Republic are available starting in 1995; and for Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Latvia, and Lithuania, among others, starting in 1990. Trade data impose the main constraint on country coverage of the final sample.
