Will Medicines Help My Child?

Generally speaking, medicine will help your child’s symptoms, but he will not truly conquer his challenge without additional help. For this reason, an approach that emphasizes training rather than medicating, whenever possible, is a better choice. In some cases, medicine can be added as a temporary “jump start” to the counseling and training process, especially when your child is not coping well with his challenge. But in cases that involve severe disease or brain damage, medicines may need to be a permanent part of the help your challenged child receives.

If your child is already on medicines and you decide you would like to take him off of them, you must do so under a doctor’s supervision. This is extremely important because stopping the medicines could lead to sudden distressing physical symptoms. Please see Appendix C for more information.

Our gracious heavenly Father, who is rich in wisdom and mercy, created your child for the same reason he created everyone else—to glorify Himself. It’s our prayer that He will be glorified as you look to Him in prayer and trust Him with your precious child. May He also grant you wisdom as you seek to make the best choices in regard to helping your child.
