Adam drove them back to his home. It was Friday night and they had no reason to get up in the morning. Why Jack had told Mark he had to get up early to work out, Adam didn't know. Other than to put him off.
Jack was silent on the drive, the tears drying on his high cheekbones. "Don't see him again," Adam wanted to say, but what good would it do? Jack wasn't seeing Mark, Mark was seeking out Jack. It was as if Mark was afraid to let go of his close companion. But what Mark didn't understand was the betrayal. Maybe he never would.
Parked at his home, Adam climbed out and waited for Jack to join him at the front door. Once they entered, Adam asked,
"You want that beer?"
"No."
"Go sit outside. Stare at the ocean."
Nodding, Jack scuffed his feet to the back of the house.
While Jack was gone, Adam quickly checked his messages.
Natalie had done a great job. There were only a few, and none urgent.
Meeting Jack on the back deck, Adam kicked off his loafers and dug his feet into the sand that dusted the patio. The last 118

thing Adam wanted to do was bring up the meeting with Mark and Steve. Jack had enough. "I may have some chocolate.
You want something sweet?"
Reaching out his hand, Jack clasped Adam's and replied, "I already do."
"Wow. That was nice. Thanks. But I could use a truffle."
"Go on." Jack grinned.
Racing into the house, Adam found some chocolates and brought the box outside. Sitting down on Jack's large lap, Adam fed him one before he reclined against Jack's shoulder, staring out at the cresting waves. After he chewed the candy, Adam said, "I'd never surf this time of day. They say all the great whites hunt at dusk."
"I've heard that." Jack nudged Adam for another chocolate.
Adam dropped one on Jack's tongue. "I used to surf when I was a kid. I was pretty good at it."
"I never tried it."
"Want to?"
"No. Not really."
"Anything you want to try?"
"Yes."
Adam twisted to look at him. "What?"
"Kissing you with a chocolate in your mouth."
Smiling in delight, Adam softened one on his tongue.
Wrapping his arms around Jack's neck, Adam went for his lips. Inside their mouths they passed the remainder of the truffle back and forth until it dissolved. When it had, Adam 119

kissed Jack with more passion. He was falling for him and not afraid in the least.
Jack's hands dug through Adam's thick dark hair. Adam wondered if Jack was wishing he could get lost in long locks of silky Mark-style hair. He would. Adam would let it grow.
Anything for his beefy guy.
After they parted lips, Jack whispered lazily, "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For tolerating this horrible mess."
"You think you have a horrible mess?" Adam held back his laughter.
"You know what I mean."
"I do. And it's not that bad. As far as I'm concerned, this is Richfield's problem, not yours."
"You think?"
"Yes."
Jack gazed back out at the blue sea.
