RETHINKING OLD PREJUDICES

Cod has become symbolic of the deep crisis with our fish stocks. In living memory, it was in such abundant, affordable supply that it was a staple fish and chip shop choice. Now it is scarce and expensive. It was estimated that stocks of cod in the North Sea, our traditional source, had crashed by 86 per cent in the last century. Stocks were at such a low level for a while that many environmental organizations advocated that we should not eat it. Thanks to efforts to curb over-fishing, stocks of North Sea cod are now thought to have picked up encouragingly, but they are still low by historic standards. Seeing this improvement, the fishing industry is pushing for increased quotas, but environmental groups are maintaining their advice to avoid buying North Sea cod, on the grounds that stocks must bounce back further before we resume eating it, otherwise this promising recovery may be set back.

The shortage of traditional fish favourites, such as cod and plaice, and their escalating cost have forced us to find alternatives and pushed us into rethinking old prejudices. Species that were once thought of as the poor relatives, such as coley and pollack, are gaining new status. Once we were a bit sniffy about them, but now more people are warming to their charms and finding that they can taste surprisingly good.
