Precautions and Possible Pitfalls

This research points to specific outreach efforts to which parents responded well. This is not to say that other types of outreach strategies should be abandoned. You never know what will work and be effective until you try.

When advising parents or making suggestions, realize that not all parents will be receptive. Young teachers with obviously little or no parental experience may not come across as credible. Also, watch out for the trap of seemingly quick and easy communication through notes to parents. A common way for elementary school teachers to communicate misbehavior with parents is to send a note home. As the study confirms, a note home, with no suggestions on how the behavior might be remedied, is not an effective way to engage parents. Experience has shown us that picking up the phone and having a conversation about student behavior is well worth the time it takes.

Finally, although your attempts to communicate aren’t intended as such, some parents might see them as meddling.
