Chapter seven
“Elliott Hutton?” Ethan frowned and shook his head. “That’s impossible. He was the only survivor. How could he…? Travis killed everyone and then killed himself. We saw it on tape. I don’t understand—”
“You’re not listening!” Brad began to stride agitatedly up and down the room. “Jesus, I finally find someone who can hear me and they’re still not listening!” Ethan flinched as Brad disappeared into thin air and then reappeared beside him. “After the assholes of Tri Delta humiliated Travis, he was on the verge of throwing it all away. He was going home to work in his dad’s grocery store. It took me days to convince him to come back to school. Travis was brilliant, a certified genius. That’s how we got to know each other.” A soft smile curved his lips. “I was flunking math and I found a notice for tutoring on the board. You should have seen him when he showed up on the doorstep. It had been raining heavily and he looked like a drowned rat. He had this mop of curly hair plastered to his head, and these big gray eyes… God, his eyes.”
Ethan felt every ounce of what Brad must have the moment he laid eyes on Travis and his fingers tightened on Dan’s. Whether the ghost was transmitting the emotion of that moment, or it had something to do with his developing feelings for Dan, he didn’t know. One thing for sure, his entire body tingled in anticipation, and he felt as though the temperature had gone up a few degrees in direct contradiction of everything he’d been taught about spirits. Brad sighed and shook his head as if to clear his mind of the wistful memory, his gaze settling on Ethan. He didn’t speak, but the slight twitch of his lips told Ethan that Brad knew how his body had reacted to the narration.
Ethan cleared his throat. “How long after that did your relationship begin?”
“Couple of weeks,” Brad replied, crossing his arms and leaning against the window sill. “It was my first paper after Travis started tutoring me. I got a C plus instead of my usual D minus. I’d never been so happy to see a test paper in my entire life.” Brad grinned from ear to ear. “I ran to his dorm room, practically knocked the door down I was so excited to show him. I remember he stood there in that doorway, his hair a mess, his eyes wide and confused behind those stupid Michael Caine glasses and I was gone, man. I barged into the room, slammed the door behind me and locked the door. We were together from then on.”
“How long?” Dan asked, his thumb gently stroking across Ethan’s knuckles.
“Eight months,” Brad replied. “We kept it a secret for eight months, then the rumors started around campus. But they were never directed at me, you know? Everything centered on Travis. His crush on me. The fact that he was the faggot. Nothing about me. I always had my suspicions that Elliott started them, but I wasn’t sure until that night.
