ELIOT WAS quiet for the drive back to Mount Clemens. He was working things out in his mind.
âDo you think he was dirty?â I asked once we hit the exit to North River Road. We would have to return to his shop long enough for me to collect my car.
âI think the odds are good,â he replied after a moment. âI donât want to jump to that conclusion because it seems unfair if he died in the line of duty, but ... it doesnât make a lot of sense for him not to be dirty at this point.â
âAnd Jake is covering it up,â I mused.
âJake is ... doing what he has to do to protect himself and his department. Heâs not purposely working against you.â
âI know I shouldnât take it personally ... .â
âYou shouldnât,â he insisted.
âI still hate it when he hides information from me.â
âYou know why he does it.â
âTo drive me crazy.â
âBecause itâs his job.â
âYeah, yeah, yeah.â I finished the rest of the ride in silence and waited until we were in front of his shop to speak again. âI have to write a piece on the news conference and talk to Fish. It shouldnât take long.â
Eliotâs smirk was sly. âItâs very wifely of you to give me an update like that.â
I tried to jab a finger in his face but I was wearing a mitten, so all he got was a face full of crocheted shark. âDonât push me.â
He caught my wrist and leaned in for a kiss. âI will push you later ... maybe over dinner. How would you feel about eating something thatâs not covered in chili and onions?â
That didnât sound nearly as good as he probably thought it did. âI donât want to get dressed up.â
âI was thinking the Thai place. You love that weird dish with the mushrooms and tomatoes.â
âI do, but the wife mentioned thereâs going to be a candlelight vigil tonight in front of the courthouse for Perry.â
Eliot straightened and looked around. âI hadnât heard anything about that.â
âEmma said itâll be full of cops and politicians. Sheâs excited about that because she doesnât realize that most of them are doing it for a photo op. Iâm curious enough about who will be there that I kind of want to drop in.â
âThatâs quite the day for you, longer than a normal shift,â he noted. âWill you be asking Fish for comp time to make up for it?â
Oh, geez, he just wasnât going to let it go. âProbably not, but I will stop at Human Resources long enough to ask for an accounting of the outstanding days I have so we can plan another trip. How does that sound?â
âLike more compromise.â He leaned in and gave me a playful kiss, lightly biting my bottom lip before pulling back. âYouâre really getting the hang of this compromise thing. I canât tell you how glad I am about that.â
That made one of us. âI kind of liked it when I did whatever I wanted and answered to no one.
