Chapter 13

Julio looked super uncomfortable, and his legs fidgeted.

“Are you nervous about something, Julio?” Olsen asked as he and I settled into our chairs.

Julio scoffed, “I don’t like cuffs.”

He rattled the cuffs.

“I’ll have to ask you to calm down,” Olsen said.

“Tssk...”

“Now, we can take all day, or you can make things easier for us by answering our questions.”

Julio looked away and didn’t respond.

“How did you know, Mr. Tailor?”

Julio leaned forward and narrowed his eyes. “Who?”

“Mr. Tailor. The man you planned to rob with MacGuire.”

“Bro, I know none of these people.”

I was losing my patience, “Don’t call me that. I’m an officer of the law, not one of your thug buddies.”

“I don’t know no Mr. Tailor or a Luke.”

I clapped my hands, “We never mentioned the name Luke. But you already knew that name, didn’t you?”

Julio’s face lost all color.

“He’s confessed.”

“To what?” Julio hissed.

“To everything he knew.”

“I need a smoke, man.”

“If I get you a cigarette, will you answer our questions? If you don’t, you will be charged with murder.”

“Murder? I ain’t killed nobody.”

Olsen stood and looked at me.

“Carry on while I get a cigarette.”

I nodded and looked at Julio.

“Just because I’m Hispanic, it doesn’t make me a murderer.”

Oh -- he was playing the racism card.

“I don’t think you understand the seriousness of the situation. We’re taking you in for murder.”

Julio shifted as much as the cuff chain allowed him.

“Look, you got the wrong dude, man.”

“So wrong that MacGuire’s statement makes you nervous.”

“Well, you’d feel the same way if you were chained to a desk.”

“I wouldn’t have committed the crime.”

Julio pushed his palms strongly on the tabletop and screamed, “Neither have I.”

“Then why are you acting like you’re guilty of the crime?”

Julio sighed and shook his head.

“You’re out of your mind, man. I committed no crime.”

I was about to ask Julio another question when Olsen walked in.

“I need to speak to you now,” Olsen said sternly.

He handed three cigarettes to Julio and an ashtray, but he did not hand him the lighter -- he lit the cigarette for Julio instead.

I followed Olsen, then out of the room, and he closed the door.

“My chief just informed me that MacGuire was chased down in the West Adams neighborhood last night. He ended up in the hospital with a gunshot wound.”

“Oh! Fuck. We need him.”

I groaned.

“As far as I know, his injury was mild. But do you think Julio was trying to keep him quiet?” Olsen asked.

“Someone was, but I don’t think it’s Julio.”

“Right. But we don’t have enough to hold Julio without evidence or a witness. Should we drag MacGuire in here?”

“If we have to, yes, but I think Julio will confess.”

We entered the interrogation room, and Julio was already on his third cigarette.

“So, tell us. What is your relationship with Luke MacGuire?”

“I don’t know, man. We worked together a few times. That’s all.”

“On robberies, you mean?”

Julio slammed his hand on the table.

“Do you want to be thrown into jail?” Olsen asked. “Start talking, or the only one going down is you.”

“I know nothing, man.
