Chapter 44

Lindsay jumped in the shower. As she dressed, she finalized her next move. Ready to get this over with, she went down the back stairs to the kitchen. As she opened the door, Lance was standing there, with his hand raised and about to knock.

“Hi, Miss James.” Lindsay wished he didn’t have such a captivating smile.

“Officer Becker. What brings you by this early?”

“I happened to be in the neighborhood. Brought you some coffee. Just checking in on you.” He held out another latte.

“Do you make house calls to everyone or am I special?” She took the coffee and set it on the counter.

“Oh, you are special but I needed to stop by and check on Mrs. Wigley. I figured since I was next door, I would brighten your day. Going out?”

“How’s Mrs. Wigley?”

“She’s fine. Her grandson is coming in later today but she had a rough night last night.” He shifted from one foot to the other.

“Did she wonder off again?” Lindsay was thankful she hadn’t seen the crazy old lady lately.

“No, she just didn’t sleep well.”

“Interesting. It’s so sweet of you to check on her. She really needs to be in a home.”

“We agree, but she doesn’t. She has good days. It’s the nights that tend to be bad for her.”

“Well, I hope she stays safe. I really need to go. Thanks again for the coffee. By the way, where do you get it?”

“At the café in town. You should meet me there for coffee one morning.” Lance gave her a serious look. There was no amusement in his face.

“Bye Lance.”

Now she was stuck. Lindsay didn’t want Lance knowing she was going next door. She wasn’t sure why, but he didn’t need to know. As they walked outside together, Lindsay said she forgot something and turned to go back inside.

She watched from the upstairs bedroom as he backed out of the driveway and headed toward the main road at the end of the lane. As she started out of the spare room, she noticed a piece of paper on the dresser that she hadn’t put there. She walked over and picked it up. It was blank. She didn’t remember putting it there so where did it come from? She glanced around the room but everything was as it was supposed to be.

Lindsay wanted to check out the rest of the house, but decided to wait until she got back from next door. She was already later than she wanted to be getting to Grayson’s. She had the rest of the day to look around the house. Now she wanted to look around his house.

Grayson answered her knock quickly. He was wearing a tight-fitting t-shirt and shorts. His tan was one she would kill to have. Her body was as fit as his and her mind went to places that made her blush.

Grayson noticed but let it go. “I wasn’t sure you were coming.”

“I got held up by Officer Becker.”

“Officer Becker? What did you do this time?” He flashed his straight, white teeth.
