Tynan stepped in after me before I could understand where we even were.

“What in Abnoba’s name, demigod?” he growled.

I opened my eyes and blinked, unsure of what the hell I was seeing.

A line of million-year-old lockers stretched into the space before us, cascading downhill. I expected a tunnel-like doom and gloom like what we’d seen under the Temple, but the air was earthy, bright and sweet. Soft sand dusted my sneakers. I saw trees rise out of the ground in the few spaces between the tightly knit yellow lockers. The apples hanging off of them weren’t exactly of the Pink Lady or Red Delicious variety. My fingers curled around cool metal as I inspected the fruit.

“Golden apples of Nav,” I said to Tynan. “This is Vizg’s influence. We’re partway into her In-Between.”

“I thought demigods have to be presently residing for their In-Betweens to exist,” he said.

“Aha, she’s here somewhere,” I said. “Weapons at the ready.”

Tynan reached over his head and untangled his massive sword from the tangle of sparkling lights and fabric. By the time he swung it around, my daggers were already in my hands, my eyes scanning the ground. There was a pop of magic next to me and Alysa materialized in her entire rave outfit glory. Her expression didn’t match her cheerful booty shorts.

“I saw your cousin come in here,” she said.

“It’s too well lit,” I said. “Where is this light coming from?”

The whole thing struck me as strange. Vizg liked the shadows but this whole High School in a magical forest vibe didn’t seem like her.

“Are you sure it was Vizg?” I asked Alysa.

She wrinkled her nose. “I smelled that weird under-tomb rot stuff.”

I nodded. Alysa was too familiar with the creatures that stalked the night when Vizg was around. She’d been in the Spiral when it was attacked by a horde of boggarts.

More boots crunched the sand under our feet and I looked back to see McGrady, Tony and Gaff join the party. They snarled as the pulled in the air. Shoulders bunching up with new muscles, McGrady gave a low howl of warning.

“Death,” he said. “I smelled deaffd.”

His mouth was forming teeth that were getting in the way of his tongue forming proper human words. I didn’t have to be an expert on lycanthropy to know he was about to wolf out.

“She has to be down here somewhere,” I said to them all. “I’m pretty sure she knows we’re here and she’s playing games.”

I didn’t need Golo to be here to tell me that we might be walking into a trap. My teeth ground together, and I hoped to all the gods of the Underworld that my highly violent, irritating, and proud cousin was still alive. As soon as he felt better, I’d make sure he disappeared somewhere obscure again until we found a way to track down Likho. If we came out of this week with all the cousins intact, that would mean that my aunt would still have to hunt us down one-by-one.
