The pain-burdened words sputtered from his lips and several emotions unfolded in me at once. Anger, sadness, and something else that I was intimidated to define.

“Your scars?”

“From the accident.”

Haunted faces with vacant eyes, drawn to the tantalizing retreat of death, his skin was etched with the fate he felt he deserved. A mask he forced himself to wear, determined to fight every battle with his demons in solitude. Knox’s tattoos weren’t art. Those blackened scars weren’t just an ode to memories or interests. They were something darker, a mausoleum, each inch a punishment and a permanent reminder.

“Knox.” I ran my fingers through his dark, disheveled hair. The sheer emotion in his stoic features, frightening in comparison to his usual rehearsed control, had me at a loss for words. He had always been running from something, I understood now why he had tried to run from me.

He’d allowed these wounds to fester until they poisoned his perception of what he deserved. Death follows me wherever I go, but it refuses to take me no matter how much I beg for it.

How long had he wanted to die? And why was it then, when he’d had the chance to tempt that fate, he’d chosen to save me instead?

We didn’t know each other’s favorite colors, go-to songs, or dream vacations. But I was starting to see something deeper within him, and I was drawn not just to his safety, but to the delicate pieces he couldn’t see made him whole.

Knox didn’t falter in danger, he kissed my palm like a promise, and he protected me with every ounce of his lingering will. Earning the trust of someone like him was a heavier weight to carry than any of my own flaws, greater than all of my mistakes. It helped me see that we were both worthy as we are, as we had been, and as who we would become.

“You were just a kid. You can’t keep punishing yourself for this. It wasn’t your fault. It never was.” I pulled his hand into mine and traced the blurring lines that told the story of his past. “I understand now why you tried to run. But you don’t have to run from me. You never have to. You’re not broken, Knox. You are worthy of more than you give yourself credit for.”

His grip tightened on my waist, and I watched something lift from him, his whole body releasing tension. “No one has ever said that before.” His breath tickled my cheek as he inched closer, kissing me before snuggling into my chest. “Thank you, blue.”
