CHAPTER 16

Taylor

I’m there quicker than I should be… but the second she called me and told me, I knew I wanted to be there for her. It doesn’t even occur to me to wonder why I was the one she wanted to see.

When I pull up in the drop-off zone outside the doors, I see her getting out of the car. I quickly put the Porsche into park and jump out.

“Hey, Em,” I call over as I’m just parked behind them.

She turns to look at me, her eyes growing momentarily wide when she sees it's me. I see Maddie is driving Em’s mom’s car, and seemingly satisfied she’s seen it’s me, and not some weird guy loitering, she gives us a toot of the horn and a wave out of the window as she drives off.

“Hey, Taylor.”

Emmerson seems shy and almost embarrassed suddenly, like tonight never even happened.

I’m sure she has a lot more on her plate now since I left her earlier.

“You all right?” I ask.

She nods. “Yeah… look, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have…”

I shake my head. “Don’t be sorry. I’m glad you called.”

I’m glad it’s me you want to see.

Reaching out, I embrace her as she folds into my arms. I squeeze her tight for a moment before I pull back to look at her. “Jump in. We can talk.”

I open the passenger door for her so she can climb in.

I’ve certainly come a long way since my little convertible in college I scraped enough money together to be able to buy.

“Wow,” she says, as I jump in the driver’s seat and start my baby to life.

“Some things only got better,” I muse. “Other than my apartment, this was my big splurge.” I’ve no idea if she knows anything about my skyline penthouse apartment.

“It’s beautiful,” she says, laying her jacket over her lap while she admires the interior.

I smile. I can’t say I don’t enjoy driving it around. One of the perks, I guess, of being a multi-millionaire. I’ve saved my money wisely over the years, not going too splurge happy. Making sure my mom was taken care of was my main priority.

I glance at her before I pull out of the no parking zone I’m idling in.

“Thank you.” I nod, swiftly exiting the drop off. “Now, tell me about your Dad. What's going on?”

She clasps her hands together as I navigate my way out of the large parking lot.

“Mom called just as I left the restaurant. Dad was having the onset of a heart attack, and he collapsed at home. They called for an ambulance. I got the call just as I left the restaurant.”

“Fuck, Emmerson.”

“I know.” She puts her head in her hands.

I reach over to clasp her hand for support. “And you saw him?”

“Yeah.” She sniffs. “He seems pretty alert considering. He was hooked up to several machines. It was so scary, Tay.”

I glance at her briefly. That’s the first time she’s shortened my name like that in six years.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do if anything happens to him.
