Chapter Twenty-Two

Taurus isn’t shocked when I shove a battered Hawken onto his office floor days after leaving Thia. We all knew Hawken was responsible for kidnapping Amara and trying to take her to Narcahta—I’ve just proven it.

It’s been a difficult journey getting the bastard here since I ran out of Bloodbane after that first day, but I managed. He wasted a hell of a lot of time fighting me on our trip.

“What happened to you?” Istorya scoffs, her purple-painted lips forming a smile that rarely presents itself.

The Ventum Susurri is currently leaning against Taurus’ desk with her arms crossed over her chest. Istorya’s skimpy attire and slightly ruffled hair tell me she’s been… working. I wonder what unlucky male she seduced and killed tonight.

“That bitch did this to me,” Hawken coughs, trying to rise onto his knees.

I kick him square in the back, and he slams face-first into the floor, unable to catch himself since his hands are bound behind his back. I grab him by the shirt collar and yank him up just enough to get in his face.

“Say it again,” I warn, my voice low, “And I’ll take what life she left in you.”

“I’ve never seen you care so much,” Jay muses from his chair near the fireplace.

Yeah, because I’ve never cared before.

I glance over to see the assassin sharpening his massive sword. I suppose his mission to Narcahta is complete, then.

“How did she steal years from you?” asks Istorya.

“Can’t you see it? Look at my face!” Hawken snaps, spitting blood onto the floor. I allow him to lean back on his heels now, but I’m tempted to kick him down again. “Taurus, this has nothing to do with the rest of them. I need to talk to you in private.”

The Sycarii King stands and turns his attention on Hawken, speaking for the first time since we arrived. “You betrayed all of the Sycarii—not just their king. You know what we do to those who break the code.”

“Taurus, please. You’ve got to understand—”

In a flash, Taurus is standing in front of Hawken, his dark eyes blazing with fury. I can feel the rise of magic in the air. The dispenser in the corner of the room seems to project more fog, and I feel a slight slowness in my usually-sharp mind.

“You will take our secrets to the grave,” Taurus snarls, grabbing Hawken’s face with one hand.

Hawken begins to scream as Taurus starts to squeeze. The once-young assassin tries to pull away, but Taurus is a descendant of Rokan, the Infinite of Strength. There’s no way Hawken will get out of this alive.

I take a few steps back, anticipating the gore that’s about to fly. Fire erupts around Hawken, and his entire body burns bright with flame. Taurus isn’t fazed. He continues to squeeze Hawken’s face, his fingers breaking through the skin.

Hawken’s screams grow louder, and so do his flames. They lick the air in a desperate attempt to take out Taurus, but it’s no use.

A few seconds pass as the Sycarii King digs his fingers into Hawken’s face.
