Why does it feel so natural to flirt with Adam?

Lord, this was supposed to be a strictly professional relationship—instead, she had allowed it to dissolve into a situation where getting too close and personal with a colleague was almost as easy as breathing itself.

How had she let herself drift so far off the mark? When she had called him after discovering the break-in of her apartment, her plan had been only to advise Adam of the situation, and her plans on how to deal with it.

And why did you call him first? Why didn’t you call the precinct?

She tried to justify the question that Adam needed to know her predicament, that it was connected to the bombing case—anything really, to tell her that she’d done the right thing, but it wasn’t working. She knew better.

And what was really odd? Her girlish delight when he insisted that she stay with him instead of being cooped up in a safehouse. Which, dammit, was so unlike her.

Cynthia liked him—as in, really liked him. But she needed to think of her next move very carefully. She had to weigh the pros and cons of a possible relationship, had to decide that if it didn’t work out, could they continue working as colleagues.

This is why staying single was so much damned easier!

He cocked a brow. “Are you saying that I should lie on the bed, naked, with ice cream on top?”

Now that was a mental vision to behold, and more of a turn-on than she expected. Dangerous too. If she didn’t put a dead stop to her wild fantasies with Detective Solberg, she was worried she’d find herself in too deep to pull herself out. At the moment, she was cutting it close.

Space—she needed to put space between them, mentally and physically. Cynthia sat back on the stool, using the counter as a barrier. “Sorry, I let my imagination get the best of me.” She shrugged, her go-to defense to put up a wall between them. That wall was shaking, though.

His icy gaze dragged over her body, and she fought not to squirm. How could a look make her so hot and bothered? “I like the way you think.”

Damn, he was making this harder. “What I like and what I do are two very different things,” she told him, keeping her voice as neutral and steady as possible. She had no reason—actually, no right—to continue their flirtation. She had told him during their first night together she’d only wanted a one-night stand, and she got that, but had no idea that Adam would offer her a hell of a lot more. Adam had been so attentive, and her body—her soul—had craved what he’d freely given. Add the little touches, such as the improvised meditation space—and well, she had some serious thinking to do. But she couldn’t do it while still being around him.

“Adam,” she started, then stopped, fighting to find the right way to say what she didn’t feel. “I think you and I need to slow down a bit.
