NINE

Laney

“Where are we?” I ask, taking in the view while pirouetting around in circles. My arms are wide open, and my head is tossed back, watching as the clouds float in patterns above me.

Basking in the floaty feeling of my body, and honing in on the euphoria that’s streaming through my veins, I forget about all of the horrid things, and shameful expectations that are waiting for me back at the commune.

For now, I’m going to enjoy this time reconnecting with one of my favorite people.

Someone that I’ve missed terribly.

“Do you not remember this place?” My baby sister, Harper, asks me as she languidly rests on a mound of green grass, her fingers gliding over a clustered patch of Texas Bluebonnets. The ombre colors of purple and blue meshing together are highlighted by the sun’s illuminating rays, pulling forth some of my best memories as a child.

Harper’s always had an affixation with flowers, but more specifically, Bluebonnets. Every time the season hit for them to bloom, she’d beg me to go down the street with her to where the local park sat. She’d bring her polaroid camera with her, and we’d go through four boxes of film, all filled with us, both individually, as well as us together, surrounded by Mother Nature’s vibrant, picturesque scenery. Not one was taken where the background wasn’t showcasing the colorful bouquets of wildflowers, they’d enhance the beauty that this world has to offer.

“I remember,” I whisper, fighting back the tears. “It was our place. We spent hours figuring out what shapes the clouds had formed.”

She laughs, falling back, losing her composure. “It’s the first time I learned what a dick’s shape is. Hell, it’s the first place you told me what a dick was.”

“Sex education in your school lacked in the informative department, Harper. The fact that you asked me if you’d need a magnifying glass cemented that for me then, and now.”

“Boy, isn’t that the truth? I can say, with conviction, that I’d never need a magnifying glass to see Wrecker’s dick. Damn, that man is built. All over. I swear sometimes I feel him in my gut when he’s pounding away. None of the porn Striker and Prowler watch can compete with what my man has below the belt.”

I shake my head, my sister must be in love. No one, no matter if you’re trying to up one of your girlfriends when she’s boasting about her boyfriend's dexterity, brags to this extent about their man. Not unless he performs really, really well between the sheets, I’m talking blow your mind and cause your brain to short circuit, or he owns her heart.

“He’s big,” she mouths, holding her fingers apart in an oval ring shape that’s the same width of my wrist, then follows that up by tracing the length of her forearm with her finger, portraying something that’s impractical, an unlikely diameter in accordance with a man’s endowment, it’s just not feasible. But she continues, repeating it over again, like a mime who’s trying to tell you something, without telling you something.
