CHAPTER NINE

Wednesday Afternoon

Cecily was coming in with the groceries when Mark and Reggie came down the stairs.

“As soon as I put these things away, I’ll serve lunch. I have a cream of mushroom soup and Turkey and bacon sandwiches.”

Reggie smiled at Mark. “No hurry, Cecily. We’ll be in the great room watching a Game of Thrones marathon.”

Reggie’s great room furniture was comfortable. He had two overstuffed chairs and a couch with feather pillows that sat in front of a seventy-inch television.

“I got calls from Bobby and Jason this morning. They’re coming for dinner with Keith and Zach. They said they won’t stay long, but they want to lay eyes on you to make sure you’re okay. Are you all right with that? I already cleared it with Cecily.”

“As long as I don’t have to do the cooking.” Reggie laughed.

“I’d poke you, but I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Well, there’s something to be said about getting shot.”

Mark gave him the look.

“I’m immune. It comes from being around Jason since we started playing soccer together when we were ten. Let’s eat lunch, watch TV and cuddle. I want to hold you.”

“Only if you get a pillow and lay down on the couch. I don’t want you to overdo it the first day.”

“Are you going to sleep with me tonight?”

“I will if you want me to,” Mark said in a shy voice. “Jason and Bobby said they’d all help me move upstairs, not that there is much to move.

Reggie sat up too quickly and winced. He grabbed Mark and said, “Of course I want you, you goof. I’ve been hanging around for two years waiting for you.”

“Okay, I’m all in. I’ll ask the guys to help.”

“Good, that’s finally settled.” Reggie got comfortable again on the sofa.

“Should we have Eddie Rowan in for supper?” Mark put an afghan over Reggie and stuffed one of the couch pillows under his head.

“Who’s Eddie Rowan?”

“The security guy on this shift. He sits outside and patrols the property. He’s suggesting we install a perimeter alarm.” Mark fussed with the couch pillows. “Maybe we should buy you a recliner.”

“A recliner would be nice. As to a perimeter alarm, it wouldn’t have done us an ounce of good. He shot at us from a car on a public street. Why don’t we call Jack and invite him to eat with us too? That way we can get a heads up on how the investigation is going and he can coordinate with Mr. Rowan.”

“Good idea. I’ll call him now.”

“Now that we’re both going to be home for a while, it makes sense to take care of our security immediately. Are you working this weekend?”

“The club is reopening after the renovation.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Yes, Jason said he’d cover for me, but it’s time. You’re home, and I’d like to have some money of my own.” Reggie began to speak. Mark held up his hand. “I’ve already accepted the fact in my head that you’re going to buy me things. But to preserve my self-respect, I have to work, even if only on the weekends.
