I wanted to say I made the wrong decision; I should have gone back and died like everyone else, but my choice to stay and become a Keeper was the best thing that could have happened to me. The first few months I spent grieving, wallowing around, missing my mother and sister, and coming to terms with the idea I would never be with my family again. Dealing with the what-ifs, especially if I had only left the gym earlier that night I would still be alive, took a toll on me. Then, I finally decided I needed to be all in with my new life and say goodbye to the old one. I came to understand every day I woke up wasn’t just a dream, but my new reality. The Waiting World was my new home.

Soon after, I craved the training sessions. Thanks to my kickboxing classes on earth, I didn’t have nearly the trouble my friend Charlie did. She would tire easily and she and Frederick would be out long before Kale and I gave up. He was what drove me to be faster and better, to kick up my training sessions a few notches. He was my competition—a good one at that.

I had been correct with my initial suspicion; he was trained, just not as a wrestler like I thought. He was twenty-two and had been in the Army since he turned eighteen. I found out he pushed one of his fellow soldiers out of the way of an attack in Iraq and was almost killed until, he too, was offered a position as a keeper.

I wanted to loathe him and his cocky attitude, but to sacrifice yourself for another was pretty impressive and secretly I admired him for it. It didn’t mean I was going to be nice to him. For five long years, he tormented me with petty squabbles and arguments, which had driven nearly every Keeper we knew to the point of insanity. If we weren’t killed by the rogues, I was sure one of our own would do Lost City the favor and off both of us in our sleep.

There was one benefit to our bickering and quarreling—it spurred us on to be better and out maneuver the other. I began to know his weaknesses due to his massive size, as well as his telltale signs as to his next attack. I studied every move he made and used my small stature and lithe frame to take him down. There was just one problem—he also knew mine.

Without thinking, I always rolled to the right and he was ready, pinning me more times than I would like to admit. Maybe Daniel had a point; we know how the other works. I shook my head as I stormed off the training room floor and towards my room. I had waited five long years to finally become a full-fledged Keeper and now; I had to be partnered with Kale! k¸1¸2

Charlie came rushing up beside me and slung her arm over my shoulder.
