Chapter Fourteen

Felipe frowned at the phone.

“What’s wrong?” Jenny asked as she exited the bathroom, wrapped in a fluffy towel and while using another to dry her green hair.

“He hung up on me.”

“Who did?”

“Lucifer.”

“Maybe he was done talking.”

“But I’d not gotten to the most important part of my message. He doesn’t know about the problem with the portal. Or at least this portal.”

A problem that they only heard about once they’d huffed and puffed their way to the top of the cliff following Valasca, who didn’t even break a sweat. The bitch. Irrational or not, Jenny hated the toned and tanned warrior. Compared to her, Jenny felt like the ugly cousin. Not that Felipe had done anything to make her feel that way. On the contrary, he didn’t really spend any time looking at their escort. But he’d also not tried to cop a peek at her in the shower or kissed her again since the interruption on the beach.

However, back to the portal issue—as opposed to her jealousy one. After their interminable climb and their meeting with Thora, they’d emerged to find a mild state of panic. It seemed the Amazons’ portal had collapsed. Just shrunk in on itself and, with a sucking noise, popped out of existence, leaving the warrior women perplexed and them without a quick means of making it to the inner rings.

That combined with everything else meant Felipe felt a need to call Lucifer with a status report.

“Why not call him back?” Jenny suggested as she opened an armoire to find some toga-styled robes hanging, none of them long enough to hide her scaled legs. Legs she couldn’t help but realize were in plain view. She’d almost stayed in the bathroom because of them, worried about coming out and Felipe catching his first full-on glimpse of her deformity.

Which is dumb because we’ve almost had sex a few times. He’s run his hand up my leg. Caught glimpses of them and not said a word. However, little peeks were on thing, a full-on introduction to her strangeness another.

Better know now if they were going to deter him from seduction than in the midst of the act. To his credit, he’d not said anything nor did he appear disturbed in the least.

However, exposing them to him, alone, in this room they shared in the guest quarters of the Amazon village was one thing, wandering around with them on display for all of Hell to see, another.

“I’ve already hit redial twice, and I keep getting a message saying the Lord of Hell is too busy to answer because he’s getting some followed by some corny music.”

“You’re joking,” she said as she debated between the white toga dress and the dark grey one.

“Nope. My Lord isn’t discreet when it comes to his sex life.”

“Sounds like some aunts I know,” she muttered, continuing to browse in the hopes of finding an outfit that would cover more of her up.

“I’ll wait a bit and try again. Meanwhile, how cool is that about the amulet?”

Now there was something to make her grin.
