Chapter Seven

By the next morning, Xaphan wasn’t any closer to a decision. When he’d left Lucifer, things seemed so clear. Find Katie. Fuck her until his balls were dry. Then go back to his lonely state, flagellating himself for betraying Roxanne.

Or…he could do something completely nuts, say, like forget his vow entirely and see where things with Katie went. Oh, but the idea intrigued him. Imagine, not waking to loneliness or a soul sucking darkness. To sleep with someone, for the first time since he’d never dared in his last hidden relationship. How would it feel to smile and share, openly, what Hell had to offer? Talk about temptation for a lonely soldier. Why can’t I be happy? Hadn’t he suffered enough?

He’d almost convinced himself he deserved a chance to live again, but then he’d mistakenly let himself glance at his shrine. He could have sworn Roxanne’s eyes in the portrait stared upon him with disappointment. They accused him of being faithless. And no good.

It made him feel like the lowest creature in Hell.

But he didn’t apologize. Couldn’t squeeze the words past his lips. Wouldn’t tell a lie – which surely pissed his Lord off. Despite the vow he’d made, the shame and guilt that he already battled, he couldn’t help wanting Katie.

Cowardice, though, kept him from doing anything about it. He didn’t stalk over to her apartment and sweep her off her feet. He didn’t plan a seduction or a battle to get her into his bed. A part of him hoped she’d take the decision from him. Seduce him like she almost did in the swamp. Make it easy because, dammit it all, having never actually courted a woman, now that he’d found one who made him want to forget his vow, he didn’t know what to do. Other than mope that was, and hurry to meet her, leaving early with a spring in his step and a determined look in his eyes that had the damned souls on the streets diving for cover.

Meeting with Katie by the portal to the ninth circle – damn she looked good, so sexy in a mini skirt that barely covered her mound, a halter top with no bra that delineated her nipples and her hair swept into a high pony tail – he throbbed with arousal as soon as he laid eyes on her. Forget his vow, their mission, everything. He just wanted to press her up against the nearest wall, suck on her full lower lips and sink into her heat.

“Hi, grumpy,” she said with a wave and a smile. “Are you ready?”

Damn straight he was. Oh wait, she meant to go on their mission. “Yeah. But where’s your weapons. We aren’t exactly going on a picnic in the nice part of town.”

A brilliant smile flashed his way. “Don’t you worry about me, baby. I’ve got all the bases covered. Besides, with that big and mighty sword of yours, what else does a girl need?” She winked.

Somehow he didn’t think she meant the sword sheathed down his spine.
