CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Getaway Canyon was well known for its attributes; especially to bad men who were on the run from the law. There were multiple hiding spots in the canyon and multiple ways in or out. A small group of men could hold off a small army for quite a while and still have a chance of getting away. The canyon was located about ten miles east of Dodge City and Jess, Reedy and Rawlins found the main opening to the canyon in the afternoon on the day after Jess’ meeting with Judge Bottoms. They stayed back and out of sight and made camp in a group of trees about a mile from the main opening to hide their fire from sight of any of the Holden gang. It was starting to get dark and they had a supper consisting of beans and salt pork with some jerky added to it. Ned poured himself another cup of coffee and when he sat down on his saddle, he sighed a little.

“Well Frank, do we have a plan yet?” asked Rawlins.

“I don’t know, do we Jess?” Reedy asked Jess. Jess didn’t look up from his coffee cup; he just stared at the black liquid, thinking. “Jess?”

“I’m thinking on it,” replied Jess.

“If they have as many men as Sheriff Wick said, taking them on in that canyon won’t be easy if at all possible,” interjected Ned.

“I say we don’t try to take them in the canyon,” said Jess.

“Well, they ain’t coming out if we ask them to,” retorted Reedy.

“Who says we have to ask them?” asked Jess, now looking up from his coffee.

“So you do have a plan?” asked Rawlins.

“Kind of,” replied Jess, still mulling things over in his head.

“Mind letting the two of us in on it?” asked Rawlins.

“Well, those men will eventually want to come on out for supplies or head to a saloon or a whore house somewhere,” exclaimed Jess. “When they do, we follow them and take them down. The rest of the men left in the canyon won’t really know what happened to them.”

“You just gonna kill them?” asked Rawlins.

“You heard the judge,” replied Jess. “Besides, I’m betting that every one of those men in that canyon is wanted for murder already.”

“I don’t have a problem killin’ someone who needs killin’, but I’d like to make sure about it before I pull the trigger,” exclaimed Rawlins.

“Ned, you have a dozen hardened men holed up in a canyon with as many ways to get in or out of it,” retorted Jess. “And don’t forget the little fact that they have a woman who just happens to be the sister of the judge who just happens to have plans to hang the brother of the two leaders of this bunch. I don’t want to think about what they’re doing to the judge’s sister, but I’m sure if you think on it some, you’ll get a picture in your head and it won’t be a nice one. Now, there’s three of us
