LACHLAN

“You cut off his head, Lachlan,” Tavish growls. “In front of a crowd. If they show you respect, it is only out of fear now.”

My lips curl into a grin. “Good. At least they will respect me… and my wife.”

Percival says nothing. He’s more of an observer, I’ve noticed, but that does not make him weak in any way. I think that he is perhaps stronger than I am. Smarter as well. Shifting my attention to him, I ignore the witches as they march into the room.

“Percival,” I murmur.

He nods his head once, his gaze focused on mine, his fingers stroking his chin. “It was not necessarily wrong. They surrounded your bride. They were unruly, and an example needed to be made. It usually puts things to rights.”

“But?”

He shifts his arms behind him and rocks back on his heels. “But it may have been perceived as a bit harsh.”

“Just a bit?” I ask with a chuckle.

Percival shrugs a shoulder. “This is not my land, not my people.”

“They are not,” I agree. “However, I endeavor to be a noble leader. My father wasn’t always concerned with the people, more with himself. My grandfather as well. I must always be careful to check my temper…”

“When it comes to our wives, there is no way to check a temper. I understand this. What happened was unquestionably unacceptable.”

“But this cannot be our focus,” I say, shifting my attention to the witches. “We must find out about the Sgàile and whatever comes with their emergence.”

“We must,” Mirin exhales. “There is nobody who I can ask. All we can do is be on edge. They will come, and when they do, we will all know it is them.”

Percival takes a step forward, then another, before he faces the witches. “I must take my own bride home. The baby comes sooner rather than later.”

He should go. This has nothing to do with him. Standing, I place my hands on the center of the table with a smile.

“Stay long enough for us to have a ball? Let the women reminisce about their old world for a bit. Two weeks’ time?”

Percival’s gaze flicks down to his boots then lifts to meet mine. “Two weeks. Perhaps your darkness will rear its ugly head, and I can help you defeat it.”

“Perhaps,” I murmur. Shifting my attention over to Mirin, I tilt my head to the side. “I need you to do better,” I state. “Find out what we are to expect. Ancient texts, other witches. Someone knows something.”

Mirin opens her mouth, then snaps it closed before she looks at Ferelith. “We will find out as much as we can before the morning light,” Ferelith murmurs, and without another word, the women slip from the room.

Percival gives me a dip of his chin before he also slips from the room. I do not move except to walk over to the window. Glancing down at the courtyard, I notice that the body has been removed.

The people are back to whatever it was that
