Chapter Sixteen
Candace was frightened. She saw pure anger in his dark eyes, anger that was combine with something even more dangerous â disappointment. He was disappointed in her, and that felt like a stab through her heart.
âI didnât lie to you. Iâd never...â But her voice was barely a whisper. âI donât understand.â
âYouâre with child! Youâve known for days, if not weeks, and you didnât tell me. I had to find out from Alog the Mage!â
Her blue eyes widened, and panic caused her pulse to rise. This was bad. Why had Alog revealed her secret? What had she ever done to him? Then she realized that sheâd never told him it was a secret. In fact, sheâd never informed him about the result of the pregnancy test, if what heâd given her could be called that. Alog had the tendency to get carried away and talk too much, and while the first time sheâd noticed this had been in her favor, now it was the second time, and it was proving to be quite the opposite.
âWhat did he tell you?â
âThat you went to him because you believed you were pregnant, and he made you a potion.â
âI never told him...â
Vorgak released her and took a step back. He could see that she was scared of him. He raked his fingers through his long black hair and tried to calm down. He was breathing erratically, his fury bringing out the worst in him. He suddenly hated himself for showing Candace this side of his character. He breathed in and out deeply, trying to control himself. He started pacing the room, and the new bedding and decorations werenât lost on him.
âYouâve built a nest,â he said in a calmer tone, gesturing toward the ground. âIt doesnât matter that you didnât tell Alog. It was obvious to him then, like itâs obvious to me now. I donât understand, Candy... I donât understand. Youâre carrying my baby. You are my mate. Who else knows?â
Candace shook her head, but then sighed, realizing it was a bad idea to actually lie to him. In her opinion, she hadnât lied, sheâd just omitted to give him the news. That wasnât the same as lying. Not when the baby was growing inside her belly, which she strongly believed gave her the right to choose when and with whom to share the news. But maybe he was right... Of course he was right.
âSedga knows. Please donât be mad! Please. Sheâs my friend, and I just needed advice...â She bit her tongue when she saw that only angered him more. âI needed to talk to someone, thatâs all. I needed to talk to a woman. This is all new to me. I donât know how to handle it. I donât know if I can handle it.â
Vorgak shook his head. âAlog, Sedga... Does Dorga know, too? Does Gorgan?â
âGod, no! I promise itâs only Alog and Sedga. And thatâs because I needed help.â
âI couldâve helped you,â he murmured. âI can still help you. Then, now, always.
