Chapter Sixteen

Candace was frightened. She saw pure anger in his dark eyes, anger that was combine with something even more dangerous – disappointment. He was disappointed in her, and that felt like a stab through her heart.

“I didn’t lie to you. I’d never...” But her voice was barely a whisper. “I don’t understand.”

“You’re with child! You’ve known for days, if not weeks, and you didn’t tell me. I had to find out from Alog the Mage!”

Her blue eyes widened, and panic caused her pulse to rise. This was bad. Why had Alog revealed her secret? What had she ever done to him? Then she realized that she’d never told him it was a secret. In fact, she’d never informed him about the result of the pregnancy test, if what he’d given her could be called that. Alog had the tendency to get carried away and talk too much, and while the first time she’d noticed this had been in her favor, now it was the second time, and it was proving to be quite the opposite.

“What did he tell you?”

“That you went to him because you believed you were pregnant, and he made you a potion.”

“I never told him...”

Vorgak released her and took a step back. He could see that she was scared of him. He raked his fingers through his long black hair and tried to calm down. He was breathing erratically, his fury bringing out the worst in him. He suddenly hated himself for showing Candace this side of his character. He breathed in and out deeply, trying to control himself. He started pacing the room, and the new bedding and decorations weren’t lost on him.

“You’ve built a nest,” he said in a calmer tone, gesturing toward the ground. “It doesn’t matter that you didn’t tell Alog. It was obvious to him then, like it’s obvious to me now. I don’t understand, Candy... I don’t understand. You’re carrying my baby. You are my mate. Who else knows?”

Candace shook her head, but then sighed, realizing it was a bad idea to actually lie to him. In her opinion, she hadn’t lied, she’d just omitted to give him the news. That wasn’t the same as lying. Not when the baby was growing inside her belly, which she strongly believed gave her the right to choose when and with whom to share the news. But maybe he was right... Of course he was right.

“Sedga knows. Please don’t be mad! Please. She’s my friend, and I just needed advice...” She bit her tongue when she saw that only angered him more. “I needed to talk to someone, that’s all. I needed to talk to a woman. This is all new to me. I don’t know how to handle it. I don’t know if I can handle it.”

Vorgak shook his head. “Alog, Sedga... Does Dorga know, too? Does Gorgan?”

“God, no! I promise it’s only Alog and Sedga. And that’s because I needed help.”

“I could’ve helped you,” he murmured. “I can still help you. Then, now, always.
