One More Surprise. Friday, April 22nd. 2159hrs.
I keyed my apartment door open and stepped inside, freezing in place. My jaw dropped nearly to the immaculate, spotless-clean floor. Alina had scrubbed the entire kitchen so that it sparkled.
I toed off my shoes, a habit which I had never practiced but felt obligated to perform, leaving them by the door, and I crossed through to my bed.
Alina lay on it, staring at her phone. âI didnât get into the carpeted area, though I carved out some extremely necessary time to wash your sheets. But the kitchen and the bathroom received a much-needed facelift. By the way, your bathroom had a swamp monster living in it. Thatâs how disgusting it was. How you havenât died yet from mold poisoning is beyond me.â
I stood at the foot of the bed, nearly speechless. âThank you.â
âHow do you not have a TV in here?â
âI donât watch TV.â I sat on the edge of the bed and stared across the room. âI watched the first Godfather and found it so boring that I gave my television away for free.â
Alina dropped her phone into her lap and stared at me with utter confusion and disgust. Maybe a little hate. âTell me youâre joking.â
âIâm joking,â I said, grinning. âI havenât seen The Godfather, either of them.â
âEither of them?â
âYeah. I havenât watched part one or two.â
âItâs a trilogy.â
âOh.â
âOh? Oh? Thatâs what you have to say? Oh? Oh my god.â She looked back and forth, as if searching for something. âDo you have a computer?â
âIn my bag.â
âGrab your computer. Weâre watching The Godfather.â
âNow?â
âNow.â Alina jumped from the bed and scurried to the small dining table in the kitchen. With little effort, she dragged it beside my bed, returning to the kitchen to grab a chair and set it beside the table.
As she busied herself, I fetched my laptop and the charging cable from my bag.
âYouâll sit in the chair.â Alina said, typing on the computer and navigating to the movie. âDo you have popcorn or candy or anything that hasnât expired two years ago?â
âDoubtful.â
âI thought you would say that. It doesnât matter. We donât need it. You ready? Sit down.â
I obeyed, folding into the chair and leaning my head against the wall.
Alina pressed the spacebar, playing the movie. As the film rolled, I struggled to remember the last time I had experienced pure contentment. Sitting across from Alina in my clean apartment and listening to the opening monologue of the classic film, a subtle sense of happiness shined on me, warming me. I glanced at the girl, wanting to thank her for this moment, but I didnât want to interrupt the movie. So, I reverted my attention back to the screen and lost myself in Francis Ford Coppolaâs beautiful world.
