Far off, something was happening. This far: many days and many nights journey away, unless the traveller was a time-twisting, spell-making magician or a free flying spirit of a young girl in love. In Arkev, in a garden of trees, an entity who had once been a man, came from the fallen shrine of the idol called in those parts, though infrequently, Sovan Tovannazit.

Volkhavaar the magician sniffed the fragrant air, and there was a new scent on it. A scent he recognized. Not of flowers or grass or dark stone; the perfume of something living yet incorporeal—a soul. It lay like the dew on the ground and clung about the sleeping place of the young actor. Volkhavaar opened the tent flap and there, scattered over the floor, the couch, the dark hair of Dasyel, lay the faintest of glittering dusts, like dust swept from the palaces of the stars.

The lips of Volkhavaar curled back. He snapped his fingers. The young man opened his eyes, hollow eyes till the magician should fill them with an appearance of sight and animation.

They fastened on Volkhavaar, blind as ice.

“What did you see in the night?” the magician asked of them.

“Blackness,” said the lips of Dasyel, “as ever.”

Volk laughed then, and Dasyel, being his slave, catching his mood as the empty vessel catches rain, laughed also.

“A moth has been fluttering round my lamp,” said the magician. “Come back, moth. Burn your wings next time. The lamp will not trouble.”
