CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Patient Zero

“Uncle, Uncle!” Ryko shouted in between panted breaths as he ran into the cave. The Lomekian guard had been so confident of the bloodline powers his uncle had imparted him with to control the Nether Blight, but when the druid used that bomb, Ryko’s confidence was shattered. If they were able to overcome his blighted forces so easily, his aunt and uncle’s plan could come crashing down.

Not all of the Lomekians had agreed to go with this plan when it was proposed, but they were cowards. He, his cousins, Aunt Edna, and Uncle Vlad had the courage to stand up for the dark elves. They should not work for peace like the Parthenuuls wanted, but for dominance as was their place. When the Thieves’ Guild had brought his uncle the last remaining fragment of ancient diseased flesh from the Nether Blight, Vlad had all but guaranteed their clan’s takeover. The man had even been willing to sacrifice himself to become the harbinger of the disease that would glorify the Lomekians.

His uncle had become deformed but had gained resistance and control over the blight and had passed it down to all who were part of the coup. Though the elderly elf had overcome the blight, it had still taken its toll. Vlad’s mind had become obsessive and he began experimenting relentlessly on himself and others. When confronted about his experiments, the elf had become defensive, isolating himself in this cave and decreeing he only be addressed when necessary.

Ryko groaned internally at intruding on his eccentric uncle’s isolation, but this definitely qualified as “necessary.” He opened the door, pushing away some elf explorers they had kidnapped and turned into blighted guards, and entered into the main cavern of the cave his uncle was inhabiting. Dread even worse than what he experienced seeing the druids went through his body, and his blood went cold at what he saw.

Vlad was a Life Mage, and his spellcraft had always been… different. Often he would try to ‘improve’ the bodies of his patients. Frequently, he would experiment on himself too. What Ryko saw was no improvement. What he saw was a monster. “Oh gods,” the guard muttered. He turned back to run out, but he only made it two steps before a blade pierced his chest and his life was no more.
