Archer had no idea why Angel was angry with him. He had thought Angel would be happy to see him up and moving so he could go home. If Archer knew nothing else, he knew Angel couldnât wait to be done with him. Yet Angel's eyes kept flashing with a combination of fury and hurt. He also thought he saw a hint of lust, but that was probably wishful thinking.
Dutifully, Archer eased back into bed. He leaned against the pillows Angel had arranged for him. Angel snagged the tray and carried it to the bed. âYou had a vast variety of foods to choose from, so I didnât know what you would want.â
âA lot of people work and live here. That means keeping a lot of food stocked. You couldâve just asked Cree to get the chef for you.â
âYou have a chef.â It wasnât a question. It was more of a dry repeating of his words.
Still, Archer answered, âYes. Thereâs usually a meal plan in place, butâlikely since Iâm downâthey chose not to disturb us with breakfast.â
âWow.â
Archer didnât know how to decode Angelâs tone. âItâs a job. Some people need to work, especially people who came from a similar background as me.â
Angel smiled. âI didnât mean it that way. Itâs more that I didnât realize how much I donât know you at all. I donât begrudge you anything.â Before Archer could reply, Angel sat at his hip and rearranged the plate, moving the food closer. âLike I said, I didnât know what to make, so you have toast with jelly, bacon, and eggs.â
âAsk me then,â Archer said, interrupting him.
Angelâs gaze moved to hold his stare. âAsk you what?â
âAbout me. If you donât think you know me, ask.â
âOkay. How did you end up in the same training camp as Seven?â
Archer knew he was digging. It was obvious Angel didnât know that for sure, and it was the last thing he wanted to talk about, but he would. âIâm surprised you know that about Seven.â He cleared his throat. âWe werenât there at the same time since Iâm older than him. But the answer is, I donât know. Well, I donât remember. From what Iâve pieced together over the years, I was born in Romania and was snatched from my family there.â He took a bite of the toast so he wouldnât say more. Even though he had opened this door, that didnât mean he liked it.
âHow did you go from that training program to owning all of this?â
Archer sipped his coffee. It was perfect. Angel knew him better than he thought. âAll of this.â He set the cup aside and motioned at their surroundings. âI got from marriage.â
âI didnât know you were married.â
Archer nodded. He took another bite before responding. âHis name was Wesley. He bought me from the training program. Even though I really wasnât much more than a slave, I suppose he loved me in his way. He didnât leave me empty-handed.â
âDid you love him?â
The question caught him off guard.
