Twenty-One

Ubba intended to speak privately to Sigurd and ask him about his life, as he was fascinated that Sigurd’s own attempt to remain a farmer had been derailed. Was he another reluctant king, forced into the limelight due to his bloodline? He asked if anybody had seen Sigurd at breakfast and nobody had. He decided to go and try his room. He knocked on the door and just as he was about to leave, Sigurd opened it wearing just his breeches. ‘Oh, it’s you Ubba.’

‘Sorry, have I just woken you up? Are you still catching up on your sleep?’

Sigurd reddened slightly. ‘Not exactly, but come in.’

Ubba walked in to see a woman hastily dressing at the side of the bed. She came quickly past him to the door and scurried out.

‘I’m sorry, have I interrupted something?’

‘No, I was just enjoying the gift Rollo sent me. He asked me if I needed someone to keep me company at night and when she turned up, I thought it would be rude to my host to turn her away.’

Ubba laughed. ‘You thought it was some French tradition, did you?’

‘Sort of! I think Rollo thought as I hadn’t brought my wife, I perhaps needed some entertainment. Truth is, she would not have joined me even if I had received more notice. Maria is not interested in being a queen; she was brought up on a farm and has no desire to have power or authority. She was horrified when I ended up becoming King, and devoted as she is to me and our five children, she would not have contemplated setting foot on a longboat and travelling to Frankia.’

‘I just wanted to chat to you before we go to Haesten’s. Come on; let’s get some breakfast and then we will find a quiet spot.’

They went down to the dining room and the tables were being cleared. Ubba apologised profusely and charmed the female servants into making them whatever they wanted. Not many women could resist one handsome Ragnarsson, let alone two. Ubba had a coffee and croissant, whilst Sigurd waded through a plate of eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, mushrooms and three thick slices of bread. Sigurd was not talking until his hunger was sated. Ubba searched his pockets for some silver coins with Rollo’s head on them, which he had given him. When Sigurd had finished, he gave the girl who had attended them two of the coins and she was delighted. Ubba chuckled as they left the dining room; he had no idea how much money they represented.

The sun was getting hot and Ubba suggested they sit in the shaded rose garden. Sigurd relaxed and started to tell his story. He had stumbled on Zealand by accident when he was travelling, and was able to use silver to purchase a large farmstead, which had very fertile land. He had started with a mixed farm breeding cattle, sheep and horses. He also produced wheat, oats and plenty of hay to feed his stock over winter.
