PATRICK!Cassie laughed. Get down from there! You‘re going to
hurt yourself. He only smiled at her, acknowledging that he had indeed heard her above the screams of adoration as he danced with Cliff on the dining room table, an old mahogany thing that had belonged to Cassie‘s mother-in-law. He strutted about in his underwear to a Donna Summer record, shaking his butt at the onlookers. Cliff let him have the moment. He enjoyed sharing the stage with the energetic straight kid.
Hey now! David kidded, as Patrick grinded into Cliff‘s rear. Patrick wasn‘t drunk. Not a sip all evening. Cassie wouldn‘t allow it. She had set some rules for him. His energy stemmed from the sheer satisfaction of having a good time. It was a rare occurrence for him.
That table is going to collapse any minute, Vera said to Cassie. Eh, Cassie shrugged. Good riddance to bad memories.
Who knew Frank and Melinda Gold could create someone like him? Terrence observed. The music was coming to an end, but the crowd that had assembled cheered for more. Ruth, who was extremely intoxicated, wanted to climb on the table with the guys as well, but was talked out of it by Vera.
Honey, if that table breaks, Vera explained, all that‘s going to be left of you when Cliff is pulled up off you will be a wrinkly ol‘ bag of bones.
Then I‘ll die a happy gal! the old woman replied. But we still need you here, honey. And in the end, Vera won out. Justin and Sandy stood near the back of the crowd, laughing at the spectacle happening before their eyes. Sandy suddenly jabbed Justin in the arm, and pointed to a nearby window. As Justin looked, he caught the unmistakable flash of a camera, the old kind that journalists from the mid-twentieth century used.
Immediately, Justin left Sandy‘s side and raced out the door, passing other guests who were not watching the striptease. On the porch, he saw a limping form struggling to hurry away. Night had descended, and it was difficult to see more than a silhouette.
Did anybody see an old lady with a camera? he asked some guests assembled on the porch.
They all regarded the question with indifference and replied in the negative.
He walked back in to Sandy‘s side. I think it was her, he said. No one saw for certain, though.
Well, if they had gotten a good look at her they would know, Sandy responded. The woman is hideous.
Do you think she got a picture?
It doesn‘t matter if she did or not. Patrick‘s in for it, I‘m afraid. She‘ll be sure to squeal on him to Melinda.
They watched as Patrick was finally coaxed down from the table and Cassie shoved his clothes into his arms.
I think you might have just found something to get you through college, she joked. Assuming I ever go, he said, slipping his shirt back on. You will.
Patrick glanced up and saw Justin and Sandy motioning at him. I‘ll be right back, he said.
He knew what they were going to say even before he heard the words from Justin‘s mouth.
