Video Games Live

But what was the now thriving American video game music market doing all this time? Where was its series of sell-out orchestral shows in the country’s swankiest venues, starring the country’s best orchestras?

Well, composers Tommy Tallarico (born in 1968) and Jack Wall (born in 1964) were asking themselves the very same question in the early 2000s. Seeing the success of Thomas Böcker’s Symphonic Game Music Concerts across Europe spurred the pair to create the distinctly better-titled ‘Video Games Live’ concerts, which kicked off in style at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005 with a none-too-shabby 11,000 punters in attendance to watch the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Perhaps typically for the American incarnation of big-budget video game music shows, the Video Games Live shows feature incredibly impressive light shows and screen projections alongside occasional guitar solos from Tallarico himself (he’s not known explicitly for his orchestral work, whereas Wall is a perhaps a more accomplished orchestrator and conductor).

In 2005, there were three separate Video Games Live shows. By 2009 that had ballooned into a globe-trotting tour of over seventy shows. Nowadays, the shows are booked up over a year in advance and the popularity doesn’t seem to be on the wane.

Despite this distinctly more showbizzy take on the video games concert, what’s pleasing about Tallarico’s and Wall’s venture is that they’ve kept classic game scores at the very heart of the fun. They take the audience all the way from orchestrated arcade classics such as Frogger and Space Invaders up to the most recent releases, all beautifully arranged for symphony orchestra and choir.

Crucially, this is now a truly global event – concerts have made it back to Japan, gone through China, South Korea, Russia, South America, Europe and many of the states in America. Each new location proves the longevity of the genre and the interest of its fans.
