Chapter Fifteen
HOOK
Time doesn’t move very fast in Neverland, but it has always seemed to fly by in the clouds. It’s easy enough for one day to turn into two when the only companions are the stars. But we don’t get much time to respite on The Star Chaser. I know something worse is coming, and we’ll likely lose more lives fighting this battle, but I choose to ignore it for the woman standing against the railing, her elbows leaning on the wood so she leans over the smallest amount. It makes me nervous to see her so close to a tumble over the edge. Even if we can’t die, a fall of that magnitude, I wouldn’t want to see what it would do to her.
“I can see why you like it up here,” she murmurs when I step up beside her, tense in case a rogue wind decides to push her over. “It’s peaceful.”
“Was it not peaceful on the ocean?”
“Sometimes,” she smiles. “Sometimes, the mermaids made sure it wasn’t, but for the most part, it was better than being on land.” She turns to me, her face serious. “Am I still a Captain if I don’t have a ship?”
I look deep into her cornflower blue eyes, seeing all the sadness there, and something else that scares me. In all the years I’ve known Wendy, I’ve never seen her so exhausted.
“It’s not the ship that makes the Captain,” I say, twisting my hook around. “You taught me that.”
She smiles. “Did I?”
“You were a Captain the moment you set foot in Neverland, Wendy Bird. It just took you a little time to realize it.” I glance behind us where Wendy’s crew try and interject themselves into running the ship. I tried to tell them to relax, to take some time to recover, but they don’t like idle hands, same as my crew. They started helping where they could. “Besides, your crew would follow you to the ends of the earth, and every single one of them would gut me if I ever threatened you. I would say that makes you a Captain.”
Finally, a small chuckle slips from between her lips and I breath a sigh of relief. Here is my Wendy Bird.
“You’re right.” She looks at the men on deck. The only ones missing are Smee and Pete. Not by their choice, of course. Wendy had to force Smee to relax. The buffoon had been trying to come above deck and help man the ship. “They would definitely gut you. I’d probably let them.”
“Oh, really?” I raise my brow at her, egging her on. “You think they could?”
“No. You’re far too fast. But,” she says, grinning, “I can certainly do the job. I learned from the best after all.”
Something warm fills me with her words, at the compliment she’s paid me. Our years in Neverland have been spent needling each other, pissing the other off, starting trouble. She hasn’t paid me a compliment since before we were Chosen, before I told her I couldn’t be with her.
