Knocking on the door, I brace myself as I push it open without waiting for his reply. I stride across the threshold with false confidence, pulling the door shut behind me and swaying my hips as I move through the room. Marcus is sitting in a chair by his bookshelves on the other side of the room, a stack of papers at his side on the wooden table.

“Maya,” he purrs appreciatively as he looks up from the document. He relaxes back in his seat with a male arrogance that I would usually find amusing, but tonight, it just makes me grit my teeth.

Making my way over to the table, I lean against it as casually as I can, just out of touching distance as he runs his eyes possessively over my body. I couldn’t bring myself to dress in the flimsy, provocative outfits he usually prefers, so instead, I picked out this dress. It’s form-fitting, showing off my hourglass figure, but it covers every inch of skin. Just the thought of being touched right now makes my skin crawl, so I donned this dress like armour. Thankfully, Marcus doesn’t seem offended by my lack of exposed skin.

Throwing the papers he’d just been reading onto the table, he rests his elbow on the armrest of the chair and props his chin in his hand, watching me with a lazy, satisfied smile. “Tell me, Maya, what have you been up to? Have you learned anything about the bastards from Saren?” Although his voice is light, his eyes harden when he mentions the dignitaries, giving away his dislike.

I thought he might ask me this, and I have been mulling over what to say to him for the last day, so I’m prepared with an answer. “They are here for trade,” I begin, drawing patterns on the table with my fingertip. “But they also think you’re up to something, and they want me to help them discover what it is.”

All true, and by feeding him a small amount of the truth, it will keep him believing that I’m one hundred percent his. I’m sure he already knows Elias and the others have been snooping around. He has spies everywhere, so there is no point in denying anything. I’m also sure that the magic binding me to him would protest if I hadn’t said anything at all.

Marcus drops all pretence of being calm and frowns as he leans forward, his hands braced on his knees. “They have been asking questions and sticking their noses where they shouldn’t.” Baring his teeth, he stares at a point on the table, not really seeing it as he organises his thoughts. Snapping his gaze up to me, he leans back and narrows his eyes as he takes me in. “I need you to keep them busy and distracted. There’s something I’m working on that I can’t have them discovering.”

My heart hammers in my chest. Could this be it? Is he about to admit that he knows about the children? Trying to play it cool, I tilt my head to one side, sliding my hand towards him along the table.
