Video game gunfire filled the sitting room of Dash’s hotel suite occasionally accompanied by Spade’s groans of frustration or whoops of triumph as they battled alongside each other on the screen. A half-eaten box of pizza and cans of soda littered the coffee table where they were resting their feet. Dash waited until they both got momentarily killed before he hit pause on his controller and glanced at his friend out of the corner of his eye. What happened the night before had been eating him all morning, but guilt had kept him quiet. It would be a breach of trust to tell anyone about Violet’s reaction. But she hadn’t answered his call or his texts all day, and he was desperate for perspective. And Spade was a vault. He wouldn’t tell anyone. “Dude, can I run something by you?”

“Finally.”

“What?”

“You’ve been distracted all day. I figured something was up.”

“Look, you know I’m not a big talker about my relationships, but something happened last night, and I don’t know what to do.”

“Out with it then. Can’t have you playing in the game tonight the way you did in practice this morning if you really want to stay here.”

He couldn’t argue with that. He’d been shit on ice earlier, and Coach hadn’t said anything. The only thing worse than getting your ass chewed out was silence. Hopefully Phlynn wasn’t starting to write him off. “Thanks. So I went to Violet’s place yesterday. Right when we were about to…” he gestured vaguely, and Spade nodded. “She had a panic attack.”

Spade barked a laugh, but reined it in when he saw Dash wasn’t joking. “She did? Really? I want to beak you about your seduction prowess, but you look serious. Okay. Well, um … did something happen right before?”

“I’ve been racking my brain, but I can’t think of anything. She seemed into it. She was giving me all the signals to keep going, and this isn’t a girl that minces words or does anything she doesn’t want to. If she’d thought I was pressuring her, she’d have broken my arm. And probably other things. But instead, she started hyperventilating and looking like she might puke.”

Spade pressed his lips into a thin light and visibly fought not to laugh.

“Shut up, okay? It wasn’t me. In fact, one minute she was staring into my eyes and a second later it was like she was somewhere else.”

“She wouldn’t talk to you about it?”

“Would I be talking to you about it if she had?”

“Okay, okay. Well, speculating’s not going to help. Be patient with her. When she’s ready to tell you, she will. Or she won’t.”

“Great advice, Dr. Phil.”

“Hey, what do you want from me? I already told you I’m not a relationship role model. If I had any idea what I was doing, I’d still be with Grace.”

The sarcasm drained out of Dash and some guilt set in. “I’m sorry, man. Do you want to ta—”

“Nope.”

“All right then.” Dash smiled. The corner of Spade’s mouth twitched. Dash hit play on his controller, and they returned to the virtual war.
