CHAPTER TWELVE

“I hear you, Detective. I’ll let you know if that low life comes around,” Madame Lockeheart reassures me. “Now, if you don’t mind. I have some matters of business to attend to,” she nods her head at me, and without another word, disappears to the back. No doubt she’ll use her talents to pick-pocket every man who dares venture into her dressing room.

“Talents? What is she, a call girl on the side?” Quinn says in irritation.

“No, not that,” I say, and I almost let it slip in my mind that Madame Lockeheart is a siren. A long time ago, sirens kept to the water, but over time, they got lonely and mated with the men they were supposed to kill.

So, what we have, is Madame Lockeheart —a great pair of legs and goddess-like voice that can bring a man to his knees and get her anything she wants. I hadn’t met one in a long time, and I had to admit that the girl had moxie.

“Are you joking me?” Quinn belts out.

“Shhhh!” I try to hush her. Dammit. I let my thoughts get away with me. Dammit. Dammit.

“So, tell me more, are they just walking around, seducing men?” Quinn glares at me. I promised I won’t lie to her so I tell her what I know, the best that I can.

“No, it’s not exactly like that. Sirens are able to sing without killing people but can perform a sort of hypnosis. Men automatically feel attracted and attached to the woman singing, as if they would do anything for her. This doesn’t mean they’ll kill them, but they do use their powers for manipulation. To get money, clothes, that sort of thing.” I really don’t want to be standing in the middle of The Blue Sapphire explaining sirens to Quinn, when there’s a killer out there.

“I understand why you feel this is a waste of time, but I want to know. Can they kill people?”

“Well, yeah—though it’s unheard of. Sirens lost some of their powers years ago when they started mating with human males instead of killing them.”

“Yeah, I got that—okay, enough about them—where do we go from here?” Quinn looks none-too-pleased with the events of the evening, and I don’t blame her. The conversation with Madame Lockeheart didn’t prove to be as fruitful as I hoped. We still had nothing to go on, not a location, or even a real name.

“Honestly, Quinn, I don’t know. I need a moment to think,” I say. I light up another cigarette and snatch a glass of whisky from a candy girl nearby. She’s charming and funny and attempts to make small talk to get more out of me, but I have no interest. I need to figure out what to do. We’re going into the second night of Amelia being gone, and I know we already have a slim chance of finding her alive, if at all.

I give the girl money and wave her off. She ‘humphs’ and turns her back to me, while I chug down my drink.
