Seth sat in front of the Doc as the man tinkered with a pile of metal and tools. He mumbled to himself as he inspected Seth’s worn and beat up wheelchair. He tightened some screws, removed others. Every so often he would mutter a syllable that sounded close to a real word, but Seth couldn’t decipher it through the jabber.

“Care to try English, Doc?” Seth asked, growing tired of being the lab rat.

“Hmm?” the man said, casting a furtive, distracted glance at Seth’s face.

“What’s all this about? Rainha said you wanted me.”

The Doc grinned. “Oh yes, yes. I do. I made something while you were away. I wasn’t sure you’d be back, but I couldn’t wait. Couldn’t wait. Just had to make it anyway.”

He hobbled with his metal leg into a small side room. Metal clanged, something fell. Doc muttered more nonsense. Then he returned.

Pushing a wheelchair.

At least, that’s how Seth’s eyes identified it at first glance, but this was something else. Something special.

“What the freaking fuck?” Seth asked, half bewildered and half awed.

“It’s your new chair. Perfect for fighting and getting around. You can leave that hunk of junk behind now.” The Doc was pointing at the chair Seth sat in. “Here, let me help you.”

The Doc wheeled his Frankenstein chair next to Seth and extended his hand. Seth grabbed on, wrapping his free arm around Doc’s shoulder, and between the two of them, he was up, out of his chair, and into his new ride.

Seth bounced as his butt hit the amply padded seat. The back support was equally comfortable and, from the feel of it, ergonomic. Seth felt like he was floating.

“How’s the fit?” the Doc asked him.

“Perfect,” Seth said.

“There’s much more.” The Doc grinned, thrilled to be sharing his weird, yet wonderful creation. “You’ll notice the simple weapon storage on the side. You can keep knives or hammers in there for use in hand to hand combat.”

Seth observed the pouch he was talking about. It seemed useful but paled in comparison to the rest of the chair and its attachments.

Doc continued. “I fabricated two major weapons. The one on your right side, there’s a switch on the armrest for it. You see, the tube curves down around the back, and it comes out here.” He pointed to a cylinder that emerged over Seth’s shoulder. It looked like, and was, an exhaust pipe from a car. “Please don’t push the switch now, but when you do, a high-temperature flame will shoot out approximately eight feet.”

“You put a fucking flame thrower on my wheelchair?” This was amazing!

The Doc nodded. “It runs off a separate tank from the one that powers your chair itself—”

“The chair is motorized?”

“Of course,” the doc said, matter of factly, as if there were any other options.

Seth examined the wheels and saw a variety of belts and gears connecting them all. The tires themselves were knobby and rugged. No more getting stuck in the mud. From the looks of it, he could scale the Andes.

Doc went on.
