DIANA WAS WAITING HALFWAY to the bottom of the mountain, within sight of the darkened tunnel from which they’d entered the cave. Evie stared at it longingly, aching to slip away and run until she made it back outside, but it seemed their tour of the dark wonderland wasn’t yet over.

“Here—you need to feed.”

She turned back just in time to see a tiny flask spin through the air, caught in a sudden flash of Asher’s hand. She looked between them with a silent question as he glanced down in surprise.

Usually blood came in a kind of pouch. Something designed to mimic human skin. She never knew what it was actually made of. They didn’t often speak of such things.

But this was something the princess had never seen before. It was apparently new to Asher as well. Diana watched as he unscrewed the top, giving it a tentative swish.

“I’m not surprised that hasn’t yet healed,” she murmured with a faint smile, eyes flickering over the young vampire’s bruised face and split lip. “Eleazer taught you a hard lesson.”

...then we attacked him with a snake.

Evie shifted uneasily, wondering if the queen knew that last part.

Her boyfriend flushed ever so slightly, wondering the same thing. Choosing not to address it he gave the flash another shake, took a tentative drink...then lowered it with a gasp of surprise.

“This—”

“Yes, it is.” Diana studied him calmly, watching the telltale stain of color blossom across his face. “A bit stronger than the animal blood you’ve been drinking.” Her eyes flashed to Evie with a secret smile. “Though it seems someone’s been kind enough to indulge you.”

The princess blushed a thousand shades of scarlet, but Asher was no longer listening.

From the second the blood passed his lips it absorbed him completely, drawing him into a kind of trance. The rest of the cavern quieted to an inconsequential hum as he drained the flask in less than a second, lowering it with a quiet gasp. His fangs pressed into his lip as his mind spun with a rush of sensation. His cool skin warmed as his eyes flashed heatedly to the queen.

A silent question hung between them.

Is there more?

She stared back at him with that same smile, daring him to ask it out loud. Evie got the feeling that if he did another flask would be produced, again and again, until the young vampire had drunk his fill. She also got the feeling it would cost him something she’d never truly understand.

It was all he wanted. It was written all over him.

But he didn’t ask. Maybe he couldn’t.

The queen tossed the flask away.

“Come with me.”

He followed immediately after her, a puppet on a string. But Evie lingered on the walkway, nervously glancing back the way they’d come. Diana was taking them in the opposite direction.

She been taking them the opposite direction from the moment they stepped inside.

“Asher,” she called bracingly, loud as she dared, “shouldn’t we be getting back?”

He paused mid-step, eyes flashing towards the ceiling as if he could see through the stone to all his waiting friends.
