Chapter Five

Friday, August 7, 1941

I’d had a rough week, waiting each day in vain for Jason to make arrangements with Milaina to see me again. Relief came fast when he sent his uncle to pay for my services the following Friday morning. Once again, I watched from the window with Melody who came and warned me. I had a doctor’s appointment for my weekly health check and had to run. She seemed very subdued, but when I asked her if everything was all right, she insisted that it was.

A few of the girls were complaining to one another about not being allowed to send their money to the mainland. Voices rose and Milaina argued that there was nothing wrong with her office safe. The money could be stored there.

“What if there is a break-in?” one of the girls asked her.

It was a fair question and one I’d thought of many times.

“The police protect us,” she said, which was probably true.

Out of each dollar we gave her, she funnelled some of it to the police for those purposes. Still, I wasn’t convinced and I was running out of sewing thread. I kept sewing up my money in various places. A couple of times I was certain money was missing, but it was just my paranoia.

I walked to the doctor’s office on King Street and got checked out. As I was leaving, I noticed a forlorn-looking Melody in the waiting room. She glanced up, and when she realised it was me, she seemed ready to run. We were the only ones in there, the doctor and his nurse busy dealing with a screaming toddler who had been brought in with chicken pox, judging by the loud shouting. Our island people had no defences against these foreign diseases and quite often, not enough remedies.

Melody let out a sigh when I kept asking her what was wrong.

“I’m pregnant.”

“Well, I know that’s a bad thing for business, but what about for you? Is it a good or bad thing?”

“I don’t know. Milaina will kill me.”

“No, she won’t. You can’t be the first girl who got pregnant.”

She was stroking her belly in a dreamy way.

“The thing is, I…I want to keep my baby.” She glanced away from me. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears.

I reached over and took her hand, squeezing it. We were officially breaking all kinds of laws for prostitutes but I didn’t care. Melody was my friend and she was in trouble.

“Do you think I am a terribly bad person?” she asked.

“Of course not. I think you would be a wonderful mother.”

She kept chewing her lip.

“Do you know who the father is?”

“No, and I don’t care. This is my baby.”

“Of course it is.”

She seemed surprised. “Terry…” her voice dropped, “I have made so much money, more than I ever dreamt possible. Would it…would I be a terrible woman if I went back to the mainland and raised my baby alone?”

“No, you would not.”

“I want to so much. I…I can get on the Matson ship today.
