Chapter Fifteen

Lauren stood by the glass door that led to the balcony and pinched the bridge of her nose. She resisted the urge to stomp her feet like a toddler throwing a tantrum right there in the middle of her hotel room. “James, what happened to ‘give it until the end of the week?’”

“Yeah, sorry about that. The good news is, I’m so damn good that it only took me twenty-four hours to realize there is nowhere available on such short notice that could possibly do our show justice.”

Down below the resort window the waves crashed on the edge of the shore, then receded to their depths. Crash and retreat, over and over, shaping the sand with each motion. Making a change with every sweep that was obvious and yet irrelevant. Imagine being such a force of nature, but having your work never truly completed. She couldn’t settle for less than the full impact her photos could have on her patrons. The venue for the show had to be spot-on. James was right. “So, what’s Plan B?”

The hesitation on the other end of the line wasn’t reassuring. “I guess we wait and see if the Hagan makes good on their original statement of being ready in a week. Maybe this will still work out.”

“James, the word maybe isn’t one I like to hear when it comes to my livelihood.” She sucked in a deep breath, collecting herself. This wasn’t his fault at all. For three solid weeks before she left for vacation he had worked by her side to make sure lighting, layout, and spacing was just right at the Hagan. The show was important to him too. There was nothing to be done but hope for the best and have faith that if anything came up, he would be on top of it. “But you’re right. Our hands are tied until we hear back from the Hagan. Just promise me you’ll keep me up to speed on any developments.”

“Absolutely,” he said solemnly. “And you promise me you’re going to continue to enjoy your vacation, including that beach bunny spring fling you’re hopping around with.”

“It’s not at all like that.”

“Uh-huh. Bye!” he sang out before clicking off the call.

When the kid caught a whiff of something juicy, he did not let it go. She’d give him that much. The waiting to see was going to kill her. She much preferred to face things head-on, like the night before with Penny all tripped out and nervous in the bathroom instead of just asking Lauren point-blank what was happening between them. Maybe that kind of wisdom and self-assurance came with age. Lauren couldn’t imagine that Penny backed down from anything at her job at the Rothmoor Casino. Of course, when it came to affairs of the heart, things were always a bit stickier.
